Senate Passes Harvey Relief Tied to Debt Ceiling, Government Funding

Senate Passes Harvey Relief Tied to Debt Ceiling, Government Funding

The Senate on Thursday passed a $15.25 billion Hurricane Harvey relief package combined with a clean debt-ceiling increase and a continuing resolution that funds the government through mid-December. The deal, which passed 80-17, was brokered on Wednesday between President Trump and congressional leaders, and Republican lawmakers were dismayed that the president sided with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader (D-CA) on a three-month extension. The measure now heads to the House of Representatives, which overwhelmingly passed a $7.85 billion clean Harvey relief bill on Wednesday. Conservative lawmakers in the House have expressed strident opposition to the package being combined with a debt ceiling hike and a government funding vehicle, but it is likely to pass in the lower chamber with mostly Democratic votes.

Did they hold the hurricane victims hostage to get this done or did both sides want it done and decided to pretend it was for the hurricane victims?

Both sides wanted it done, but Republicans wanted it done for 18 months, Dems wanted only 3 months on the debt ceiling. Republicans then offered 6 months. Dems wouldn't budge off of 3 months and after an hour of going back and forth Trump said "done".
