    Fair Tax Act and illegals

OK, it seems that Judy has brought up a subject quite aside from the attack on William by the Chicago based community group of racists who would drag him through the mud.

Let's discuss The Fair Tax Act.

As I see it, passing that act into law as a means of fixing the tax problems that exist in this country today is mostly a good thing. It would, indeed, level the playing field in terms of a fairer system of taxation for all, take the burden off the middle class, where it now lies, and get a chunk from the illegals in this country who now pay none because they, like the rest of us, have to eat and wear clothes if nothing else.

It would definitely take away many of the "hidden taxes" we pay today. It would definitely take away the tax burdens levied on businesses that are their supposed excuse for moving their operations overseas (which I think is really just that they like slave labor who won't complain.)

I see but one potential flaw but it is the most disastrous to the program if it were to come about:

Who is to guarantee the retailers, who are supposedly going to collect this tax at the point of sale, WILL send in the proceeds? Do you know how many foreign nationals, including illegal immigrants, own businesses and hold federal and state Tax ID numbers in this country? I don't have statistics but there are a good percentage of Tax ID number holders right here on the border that I come into contact with daily and many of them are Mexican citizens who do business in the USA. Are they all sending in their sales tax? Are they paying tax on the income they derive from their "businesses?" That is the part that bothers me. If the retailers find some way to escape paying the sales tax they collect into the system, where will the revenue to foot all the bills come from?

If our government can't keep track of the illegals who came legally, can't get them out of here, can't close the borders to keep more from getting in here, how is it going to keep track of the number of retailers and assure that the tax revenues are being deposited?

I love the idea of the Fair Tax Act. I have petitioned Congress to consider it. But I would like to debate how we, as a nation, could/would enforce it.

Would people eventually have to call the IRS and say, "I spent fifty dollars at JoeSchmoe's last week--did they turn in the tax money?" in an attempt to police one more neglected law enforcement like the MinuteMen now have to patrol the borders in an attempt to keep more illegals from entering this country?

What do the rest of you think about it?

That's a good point you've raised, Junius. I will ponder on that!
