Cruz Filibuster: Resistance is Not Useless

Perhaps because I have spent considerable time in the world of opposition politics abroad, I find it surprising when my fellow Americans, conservatives in particular, fail to see how and why an opposition tactic, like defunding Obamacare, is necessary. In this regard our left-wing opponents are far better suited to surviving periods out of political power; today’s Democrat leaders, including both Clinton and Obama, are miles ahead.

The left understands that some struggles are worth having even if they are difficult to win because voters want politicians who are seen to stand for something. The public may like compromises and achievements but it tends not to reward them. Instead, it gravitates towards leaders who are seen to be fighting for them, and fighting for core supporters most of all. Sens. Ted Cruz and Rand Paul understand that; few others do.
The Republicans’ biggest challenge today is not losing moderates or independents (which Mitt Romney won in 2012). Rather, the biggest challenge is motivating the party’s core supporters after the disappointment of 2012, and after several of the most promising young stars--Sen. Marco Rubio foremost among them--reneged on earlier conservative positions in favor of fatally flawed compromises on issues like immigration.
That disappointment is most acute on Obamacare, which did more to rouse the party’s base than any issue in recent memory. Opposition to Obamacare drove the historic win in the 2010 midterm elections. But the 2012 elections produced a party nominee who had enacted a similar policy in his home state. Worse, by 2013 many of the governors the Tea Party helped elect in 2009-10 had accepted Obamacare’s funding for Medicaid.
The collective effect of these losses and capitulations was demoralizing. And while Obama’s mistakes during the early months of his second term sent his approval ratings lower, those failures were not enough to restore enthusiasm for the Republican brand as an alternative. Defunding Obamacare always had a very narrow chance of success in DC, but it has been hugely successful in reviving conservative interest in the cause.
The timing could not have been more propitious. The new Obamacare exchanges are due to open in a few days, and none of them is ready. Unions are withdrawing their support for Obamacare, after realizing how much damage it will inflict on their health insurance policies and their membership. At a moment when the spotlight is finally on Obamacare’s failures, does the GOP really think “wait-’til-2016” is a winning response?
That might be an acceptable Plan B, but it is no Plan A. By pressing ahead with an effort to defund Obamacare, Cruz and his colleagues have shifted the burden of defending the law back to the president and his party. They may have to back down, but they will have highlighted again the importance of winning both Congress and the White House--and reassured the public that Republican control will make the difference.
Several conservatives whom I admire and respect have failed to see the strategic gain in the defunding battle, focusing only on tactical setbacks. Cruz may lose, but that does not make his effort “empty,” “futile,” or “meaningless.” It is part of laying a foundation, not only for a presidential campaign (no shame in that!), but for the opposition cause itself, which cannot win by waiting for the next election, after losing badly in the last.

If this bill passes, it will collapse, there are alot who will not sign onto this, including me. I think after a year of Obamcare combined with amnesty for Illegal aliens (if it passes) Americans will rise up in total revolt because Washington is forcing people to accept absolute Despotism. Senator Rubio on the floor.

Palin: Light Up Capitol Hill Switchboards to Defund Obamacare

    Print Article Send a Tip

by Tony Lee 23 Sep 2013 314 post a comment
On Monday, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin urged Americans to light up Capitol Hill switchboards to urge senators to live up to their campaign promises and support Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Mike Lee (R-UT) in their effort to defund Obamacare.

"Remember, we elected these senators precisely for moments like this. If they can’t do anything with the power we’ve given them through their elected office, then perhaps it’s time for them to retire and let someone else have a go," Palin said. "Opposition to Obamacare carried us to victory in 2010. And 2014 is just around the corner."
On Saturday, Palin wrote an exclusive op-ed for Breitbart News backing Lee and Cruz. In her Facebook post on Monday, the day the Obamacare fight started in the Senate, Palin said it was even more important for Americans living in red states—like Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana, and North Carolina—represented by Democrats to "politely" let their senators know there will be consequences at the ballot box if they vote procedurally to shut down debate in the Senate:
Please call your senators and politely ask them to stand with Senator Cruz. This is especially important if your senator is a Democrat up for re-election in a red state in 2014. That would be Senators Mark Begich (D-AK), Mark Pryor (D-AR), Mary Landrieu (D-LA), and Kay Hagan (D-NC). Remind them politely that we are watching their votes very carefully and even a procedural vote that shuts down this debate will be regarded as a vote for Obamacare, and there will be consequences for them at the ballot box next year. The same goes for Republicans up for re-election. We definitely expect them to stand shoulder to shoulder with Senator Cruz through thick and thin.
The House passed a short-term resolution to fund the government except for Obamacare on Friday. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is attempting to insert an amendment to that bill that funds Obamacare before sending the bill back to the House. On Monday, Cruz asked that there be a 60-vote threshold for amendments on the House bill being taken up in the Senate.
Palin reiterated, "We shouldn’t preemptively surrender the fight to those who rammed through this outrageously burdensome and unaffordable ploy for government control of health care even though some are trying to convince us that the fight is futile."
"Just because a fight isn’t easy, doesn’t mean it’s not worth fighting," she said.
Palin then included information about where Americans could find the contact information for their senators:
The number for the Capitol Hill Switchboard is 202-224-3121. Ask for your senator’s office. You can also find their contact information and contact them online at

UPDATE: Cruz: Congress like World Wrestling Federation
Cruz is obliterating the ruling permanent political class in Washington, saying that Congress is "a little bit like the World Wresting Federation" where everyone knows the outcome in advance and the rhetoric is "all for show."
Regarding the defunding of Obamacare, Cruz said, "No more fake fights. No more hiding your votes. No more trying to fool the American people." He has insisted throughout his speech that it is time to "make D.C." listen. And he ripped Republicans who will say they voted against Obamacare knowing the predetermined outcome in advance.
Cruz said he wanted to "stand and fight for the more than 1.6 million Americans who signed the national petition against Obamacare" and the millions more who did not sign because they were told by politicians that it was impossible to defund Obamacare.
He said these establishment politicians get annoyed at their constituents (He said he heard senators complain that they were getting "too many phone calls" from constituents) for flooding their offices with phone calls more than they are about Obamacare and are concerned only about being "invited to all the right cocktail parties in town."
"There are members in this body for whom that is really, really important," Cruz said. "At the end of the day, we don't work for those holding cocktail parties. Or the intelligentsia in the big cities writing newspaper editorials."
Cruz said he was reminded of The Little Engine That Could because a lot of members "of this body ... what they'd say to that train at the bottom of the train" is, "No you can't!"
Cruz said many in Washington think they are the "kings and queens of their own fiefdoms" and said he has "26 million bosses back home in Texas."

If someone working 40 hours is reduced to 28.5 hours because of Obamacare, the reduction in income may make possibly millions more eligible for Foodstamps, another negative effect i just relized.
