Senator Sessions Right to Oppose Immigration Bill------

Senator Sessions Right to Oppose Immigration Bill
    by Gary Palmer
The U.S. Senate debate over what to do about the illegal migration of millions of Mexicans and Central Americans into the United States is a defining example of how politicians in both parties have completely abandoned our national interests in favor of political interests. By a vote of 62-36 the Senate passed its version of an immigration reform bill that is a fraud and a sham.

There are currently ten to twelve million people living in this country illegally with over half of them from Mexico and an estimated 500-700,000 more illegal aliens coming in each year.

This is not immigration; it is a mass migration of unprecedented proportions.

Supporters of the Senate bill like to point out that, including illegal aliens, the foreign born population of the U.S. is now at twelve percent. They claim that the U.S. can handle the ten or twelve million illegal aliens that are already here plus two to three million new immigrants annually. They like to point out that while the foreign born population is at twelve percent, we shouldn't be concerned because it was fifteen percent in 1910.

But what they don't point out is that the immigrants living in the United States in 1910 were not a homogeneous group. While the vast majority of new immigrants in the early 1900s came from Europe, they came from just about every country in Eastern and Western Europe. They spoke different languages, they came from different cultures, and they had different customs. The only thing they had in common was a desire for a better life in the United States as Americans.

In other words, the wave of immigrants that came to these shores in the late 1800s and early 1900s was not a mass migration from one nation or ethnic group to the United States. And while these immigrants usually congregated in their own ethnic enclaves, they were not trying to maintain their own culture and society. They congregated together in order to help each other assimilate into America. They learned English and adopted American customs and they made sure their children were educated. They did not come here to become German-Americans nor Italian-Americans nor any other hyphenated Americans. They immigrated here to become Americans.

What we are witnessing now, particularly in regard to Mexicans crossing our borders, is different. It is a mass migration of people with a common language, a common culture and common customs, living in their own enclaves and setting up their own communities and networks.

This is not assimilation; it is the creation of a sub-nation.

And according to a report from the Heritage Foundation, a highly respected think tank in Washington, half of the illegal aliens entering our country are high school dropouts. Based on recent reports on the dropout rates from our public high schools, you would think we would not need to import any more.

Sen. Jeff Sessions understands what is at stake here. Sessions has been outspoken in his criticism of the Senate bill and fought Democrats and some members of his own party to remove some of the bill's worst provisions.

Just how bad is the Senate bill? Consider the following points compiled by John O'Sullivan, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute:

Even though crossing our borders illegally is a felony, an amendment to the Senate bill to prohibit illegal immigrants that have worked here under false names and false Social Security numbers from claiming credit for Social Security payments they have made was tabled. O'Sullivan cites the Pew Hispanic Center estimate that 40 percent of the illegal aliens in this country have been here for more than five years. Consequently, if this bill passes the cost to the Social Security Fund could be enormous.
The Senate bill supposedly does not provide for amnesty. But an amendment to prevent guest workers that have only been here two years from earning citizenship was defeated which basically makes the Senate bill an amnesty bill.
An amendment to make English our official language was replaced by an amendment that certified English as America's "common language" which means absolutely nothing.
An amendment to make criminal aliens ineligible for the Senate bill's amnesty provisions was first overwhelmingly rejected by the Democrats. A Republican amendment to prohibit aliens from qualifying for the bill's amnesty provisions if they have committed a felony or three misdemeanors was eventually adopted. However, crossing our border illegally multiple times, which is a felony, does not count. That means an illegal alien can commit multiple border crossing felonies and still be eligible for amnesty.
Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa compiled a list of the top 10 flaws in this Senate bill. Included in his list was a provision that will allow illegal immigrants to avoid having to pay unpaid back taxes to the federal government for two of their last five years that they worked and did not pay taxes.

Think about this. A person that is not a citizen, that has committed a felony by crossing our borders multiple times and is residing here illegally will be excused from a major part of the consequences of tax evasion while ordinary American citizens would not only have to pay all their back taxes plus interest, they would likely also face criminal prosecution and jail time.

No wonder the majority of Americans oppose this bill.
