Approved: Waukegan, IL will apply for 287g

I went to our council meeting last night and after a very interesting council discussion it was approved 7-2 to go forward with the application for 287g. It even made the Chicago news. Of course it wasn't in our own local paper! It was cool to see our mayor and council discuss Carpentersville, Hazleton, the incompetent politicans in DC, racial profiling, mayor said that maybe Waukegan can be a guiding light in this area for other cities, etc... Someone filmed it and hopes to get the video on youtube soon.

Already there is talk of groups coming in to march and protest this move. But wouldn't that be good -would make the town even more focused on fixing this issue.

Waukegan approves plan to help enforce federal immigration laws

June 18, 2007 - The city council in far north suburban Waukegan approved a plan Monday night to give local police help enforcing federal immigration laws.

The council voted to support a program called 287-G. It's run by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Under the program, state and local law enforcement are trained to identify and detain illegal immigrants. It was created primarily for police agencies in states that border Mexico.
Waukegan is among the first communities outside that area to adopt the program.

Did anyone hear about this? Is the group grasping for straws or is Chertoff putting a hold on applications?

    Honorable Michael Chertoff
Secretary US Department of Homeland Security
    Washington, DC 20528

    Dear Secretary Chertoff:
The Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey (LLANJ) is the largest Latino advocacy organization inNew Jersey, and represents most of the leading Latino organizations across the state. The mission ofthe LLANJ is to mobilize and empower Latino communities to obtain political, economic, and socialequity. LLANJ is one of New Jersey’s leading advocates for Comprehensive Immigration Reform andover the past year we have been working with a coalition of national organizations to pass legislationthat is fair and comprehensive, and that offers undocumented immigrants already living in the UnitedStates a path to earned immigration status. We write this letter in to request that you reject the Morristown, New Jersey, Law EnforcementPartnership application for a Memorandum of Agreement (MOU) with the US Immigration and CustomsEnforcement Agency (ICE). We are asking that you reject the application because in the public hearingsconcerning the Morristown’s application to ICE, Mayor Cresitello and members of the City Councilprovided a public rationale for the MOU that is in direct violation of Section 287(g) of the Immigrationand Nationality Act and the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Fact Sheet issued by yourdepartment, dated March 23, 2007, whichstates“State and Local patrol officers, detectives, investigators, and correctional officers working in conjunction with ICE gain: necessary resources andauthority to pursue investigations relating to violent crimes, human smuggling, gang/organized crimeactivity, sexual-related offenses, narcotic’s smuggling, and money laundering.â€
