Shock Poll: Insurgent Danny Tarkanian Leads Mitch McConnell’s Incumbent Dean Heller 4

Shock Poll: Insurgent Danny Tarkanian Leads Mitch McConnell’s Incumbent Dean Heller 44 to 38 in Nevada

    by MATTHEW BOYLE
    27 Oct 2017
    Washington, D.C.

Danny Tarkanian, the anti-establishment conservative challenging anti-Trump establishment Sen. Dean Heller (R-NV) in Nevada’s primary, has solidified his lead over Heller in a new poll from JMC Analytics released on Friday morning.

The poll of 500 likely Republican primary voters in Nevada conducted from Oct. 24 to Oct. 26 shows Tarkanian leading Heller by six percent, outside the survey’s margin of error. Tarkanian, at 44 percent, is towering over Heller, who is down at just 38 percent. For a sitting senator to be polling under 40 percent in his own primary—never mind under 50 percent—this far out from next summer’s primary is a horrendous sign for Heller, and another cause for worry for the GOP establishment in Washington which has been dealt a series of stinging defeats in recent weeks. Tarkanian’s six-point lead is outside the poll’s 4.4 percent margin of error, and is the second survey in recent weeks showing Tarkanian leading Heller—the other one from JMC Analytics shows the same thing, a Tarkanian lead.

A whopping 86 percent of those surveyed are more likely to support a GOP candidate for the U.S. Senate who backs President Donald Trump’s agenda, 70 percent much more likely and 16 percent somewhat more likely. Only 11 percent are either somewhat or much less likely to back a GOP senate candidate who supports Trump’s agenda.

Heller’s favorability is at just 51 percent, while his unfavorable ratings are up at 43 percent. Tarkanian’s favorability is at 59 percent while his unfavorable ratings are down at 24 percent—numbers essentially unmoved since August, which means efforts by the Senate Leadership Fund are falling flat in Nevada just like they did in Arizona and Alabama.

The Senate Leadership Fund, a PAC affiliated with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, has been dealt a series of brutal losses in recent weeks. Back on Sept. 26, hours before the polls closed in Alabama’s special election Senate GOP primary runoff, Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) announced his retirement next year. Corker was instrumental in pushing President Trump to endorse and campaign for appointed establishment-backed incumbent Sen. Luther Strange (R-AL) in Alabama, who was later that night dealt a significant loss in the primary runoff to conservative Judge Roy Moore. Meanwhile, this week, Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) announced his intent to not seek re-election next year—the third such establishment senator to go down in flames in the past month.

Interestingly, JMC Analytics nailed the Alabama Senate primary and runoff in its polling, emerging as one of the firms that caught the trend before everyone else. Strange’s campaign, and McConnell’s allies at the Senate Leadership Fund, tried to dismiss JMC Analytics polling showing Strange losing badly to Moore–but they just embarrassed themselves by doing so.

Now, with Heller underwater in Nevada, it appears conservative anti-establishment pro-Trump forces are moving in on Nevada behind Tarkanian against the pro-amnesty Heller—and looking to states like Wyoming, Utah, and Mississippi as well.

Heller’s 2013 vote for the “Gang of Eight” amnesty bill makes him anathema to most Republicans, who despise those who voted for the bill that would have legalized every illegal alien in America. President Trump ran hard against that bill in 2015 and 2016, defeating many of its supporters including Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush—establishment politicians who otherwise would have likely had a better chance of winning in 2016. Now, support for amnesty for illegal aliens—and opposition to President Trump’s America First agenda—endangers folks like Heller and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), who also voted for the 2013 amnesty bill.

In the case of Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS) and Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY), their vote against the Gang of Eight amnesty plan in 2013 is not likely enough to save them given their close proximity to McConnell.

This week, in the wake of Flake’s resignation announcement, Heller has emerged as a top target for conservatives and a top protection priority for McConnell. McConnell has sent his Senate Leadership Fund team into the Nevada battle to try to protect Heller, as the group sent out a bunch of fake news about Breitbart News Executive Chairman Stephen K. Bannon—the former White House chief strategist who was President Trump’s general election campaign CEO—by falsely arguing Bannon is a white supremacist.

The effect of the attacks, however, is now McConnell is falsely alleging that President Trump associates with white supremacists, and hired one to run and win his general election campaign in 2016—and McConnell is accusing President Trump of hiring a white supremacist to be his White House chief strategist in 2016. The attacks by McConnell and his cronies on President Trump and Bannon are unlikely to be successful; failed 2016 Democratic nominee for president Hillary Rodham Clinton learned that the hard when she ran the same losing playbook that McConnell is running now last year.

Part of why McConnell is desperate to protect Heller is because Tarkanian has promised to vote against McConnell remaining as Senate Majority Leader due to all of McConnell’s failures in leadership. Heller, meanwhile, refuses to answer–he has dodged the question repeatedly–whether he supports McConnell remaining as Senate Majority Leader.

It remains to be seen if McConnell and his henchmen can do enough to protect Heller, or if Heller will also throw in the towel and give up before a risky, expensive, and now per recent polling clearly-likely-to-be-unsuccessful campaign next year.

Not finding anything real strong yet but found this within an article:

In neighboring Nevada, perennial candidate Danny Tarkanian calls Heller, who held a press conference blasting the first Republican Senate health care bill, a “dead man walking.”

“I hope Steve Bannon will come in and support me,” Tarkanian told Mic. “I hope Breitbart will cover this substantially. I hope we’ll have some third-party support.”

Both Beach and Tarkanian said it isn’t their aim to form a Senate version of the House Freedom Caucus, a group of about 30 Republicans who pressure leaders to enact conservative policy. But their goal sounds similar: Send Republicans to Washington who will not compromise on immigration, trade and job creation.

“The people that are voting are so upset with politicians who say one thing when they run for office and do the other thing once they’re elected,” Tarkanian said. “We’re gonna be elected with a certain purpose — and get that purpose done.”

Horsford slams Tarkanian on immigration stance

By Laura Myers LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
    August 1, 2012 - 11:51 am

Democratic congressional candidate Steven Horsford on Wednesday slammed his GOP opponent Danny Tarkanian for accusing President Barack Obama of using Hispanics as a "political tool" to win re-election by offering two-year work permits to young illegal immigrants.

"Nothing could be more cynical or further from the truth," Horsford said, speaking to a Hispanics in Politics breakfast two weeks after Tarkanian criticized the president in front of the same group.

Horsford said he supported Obama’s executive action in June to end deportations of immigrants brought to the United States as children by their families without documentation. The president said he acted because Congress hasn’t passed the DREAM Act, which would give young immigrants a path to U.S. citizenship if they attend college or join the U.S. military. Horsford said he supports the DREAM Act, which Tarkanian opposes.

"He would be just another vote for the party of no," Horsford said of his opponent without naming Tarkanian.
Horsford reminded the supportive Hispanic crowd that Tarkanian took a hard immigration line during his failed 2010 U.S. Senate campaign when he was competing with other conservatives in a GOP primary.
At the time, Tarkanian said he supported a harsh law in Arizona, including profiling of Hispanics by police, who could ask if they’re in the country legally if stopped for any reason. The U.S. Supreme Court threw out most of the law, although it held up the "show us your papers" provision, saying it’s open to future legal challenges.

Tarkanian also argued for cutting health, education and other benefits for illegal immigrants in order "to take away the incentives for people coming into the country illegally."

Two weeks ago, Tarkanian faced a largely hostile reception at the breakfast of Hispanic activists. He told the group Obama purposely failed to deliver on the promise of comprehensive immigration reform.

"Why wasn’t it passed?" Tarkanian asked. "Maybe it wasn’t passed because … they want to use this as a political tool. … They’re using it as a tool to get votes back in Washington."

Tarkanian said he does support offering U.S. citizenship to immigrants who join the U.S. military, a popular idea among Republicans, but he said he does not back the full DREAM Act. He said he also wanted to make it easier for immigrants to get guest worker visas so they can provide needed farming and other labor in the United States.

Horsford said he backs comprehensive immigration reform, which would include the DREAM Act and cutting red tape so it’s not as difficult for immigrants to legally apply to work and live here. More than 11 million illegal immigrants are thought to be living in the United States.

"We are a nation of immigrants, and we have to live up to that standard now," Horsford said during a wide-ranging 24-minute speech to the group that was interrupted by applause several times.

Horsford is the chief executive officer of the Culinary Training Academy, where 50 percent of the graduates are Hispanic, he said. About half of those who train at the academy are un*employed or underemployed, he said, while others are looking for new careers in Southern Nevada’s hospitality industry.

The academy works with the Culinary union out of a small trailer office to provide free help to immigrants to "navigate the process" of getting legal papers to live and work in Las Vegas, Horsford said.

"Nearly one-third of all successful applications were processed through that trailer," Horsford said.
Horsford, the outgoing Nevada Senate majority leader, was an early supporter of Obama and helped the Democrat win Nevada four years ago. Like the president, Horsford needs to win a hefty portion of the Latino vote in the Silver State, where Hispanics have grown into a political force at the ballot box.

Horsford and Tarkanian are competing for Nevada’s new 4th Congressional District, which has a Hispanic population of 27 percent. The sprawling district covers nearly half of Nevada, from North Las Vegas in Clark County to part of Lyon County and all of Esmeralda, Lincoln, Mineral, Nye and White Pine counties.

In the district, Democrats have a voter registration edge over Republicans of about nine percentage points. Horsford is expected to do well in the minority-rich urban core of the district, which he has represented in the state Senate for eight years. Tarkanian, who has lost three previous attempts to win political office, enjoys strong support among the more conservative rural part of the district, where Republicans prevail.

RELEASE: Statement on the Kate Steinle Verdict

Las Vegas, Nev. — On Friday, in response to the not guilty verdict in the Kate Steinle murder trial, Nevada U.S. Senate Candidate Danny Tarkanian issued the following statements:

“Like President Trump and so many other Americans, I am extremely disappointed and angered by the not guilty verdict reached in the Kate Steinle murder trial. The defendant took full advantage of our broken immigration system and San Francisco’s dangerous sanctuary city status.”

“San Francisco’s sanctuary city status allowed an illegal immigrant with seven previous felony convictions and five previous deportations to remain in its city and our country. That’s utterly appalling. San Francisco’s reckless disregard for federal law led to a devastating tragedy for the Steinle family. I’m heartbroken for the Steinle family’s loss. They remain in our family’s prayers. They deserve justice.”

“Sanctuary cities and an unsecured southern border are immense threats to our communities and our national security. We must secure the border and we must see the end of sanctuary cities.”

“Jacky Rosen voted against Kate’s Law and the No Sanctuary for Criminals Act. Instead of voting to strengthen immigration enforcement, Jacky Rosen voted to weaken it. Jacky Rosen’s support of sanctuary cities puts Nevada families at risk.”
