Hundreds of desperate people attempt the dangerous sea crossing every week in fragile rubber boats. Behind these frantic scenes on the water lies a fierce political battle taking place inside the British Parliament.
A chaotic video from the French coast shows a man releasing a small child into the water as he struggles to board an overcrowded dinghy.

French rescue workers swam out quickly and pulled the floating child to safety, according to the Daily Mail.
Official records show that 781 migrants crossed the English Channel on a single Wednesday.
This sudden surge set a new daily record for the year. The three-day crossing total pushed past 1,000 arrivals and placed heavy pressure on Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood.

Just three weeks ago, Mahmood claimed that government tactics were working.

By comparison, Wednesday’s figures reached over five times what authorities normally expect on high-risk crossing days.
