Some GOP at odds with Trump over strike

Some GOP at odds with Trump over strike

Chris Cassidy Saturday, April 08, 2017

Many Republicans — including some of President Trump’s most loyal supporters during the campaign — opposed the strike against Syria, decrying an apparent abandonment of the billionaire’s “America First” pledge and calling for congressional approval of the military action beforehand.

“Trump campaigned on not getting involved in Mideast. Said it always helps our enemies & creates more refugees. Then he saw a picture on TV,” tweeted conservative commentator Ann Coulter, a Trump supporter, referring to the president’s claim to have been deeply affected by images of Syrians overcome by poisonous gas earlier this week.

Coulter added that “meddling in the Middle East has destroyed every president who’s ever tried it,” and echoed many Trump backers who bypassed other GOP candidates last year exactly because of his campaign stance to stay out of Syria.

As the attack was underway, Paul Joseph Watson, a YouTube personality and InfoWars editor, declared: “I’m officially OFF the Trump train.” He clarified yesterday he only meant “in terms of Syria,” not the whole of the Trump presidency.

Michael Cernovich, a right-wing blogger and Trump supporter who has been hailed by Donald Trump Jr. and Kellyanne Conway, also broke with Trump on Syria.

“Trump’s base of support is gone if he goes to war with Syria, the same people who betrayed before election will betray him again,” tweeted Cernovich.

Many moderate Republicans, who blasted Trump during the campaign, rejoiced that the president was carrying out action they felt the Obama administration should have done years ago.

“Unlike the previous administration, President Trump confronted a pivotal moment in Syria and took action,” U.S. Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham said in a joint statement. “For that, he deserves the support of the American people.”

Personally, I don't think we are going to "war" with Syria, but Trump did get their attention. Syria is such a mess that one needs a scorecard to keep up but the rest of the world cannot resettle the entire population while they figure it out.
