Last Update: 5/25 9:55 pm

SAN DIEGO - A records custodian at the federal immigration office in San Diego was sentenced Wednesday to 5 1/2 years behind bars for replacing computerized biographical data on several citizens with that of illegal aliens, which allowed them to get U.S. passports.

Richard Abapo Quidilla, 39, of Pico Rivera, also admitted that he charged thousands of dollars for each record alteration.

He pleaded guilty March 8 to computer fraud and aggravated identity theft.

Agents executing a search warrant at Quidilla's home also found items stolen from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office where he worked, including blank certificates of citizenship, an embossing device with the official United States seal, citizenship records and legal permanent resident cards.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Whelan handed down the federal prison term and ordered the defendant to forfeit $16,800 in cash found at his residence.
