Senate expected to take up immigration bill today

TALLAHASSEE --
The Florida Senate plans to finally take up its immigration bill on today.
Florida Senate President Mike Haridopolos said he had planned to deal with it on Monday, but said it's a complicated measure and he wanted to give senators a chance to read it.
Still, immigrants came to the state Capitol on Monday holding signs and chanting "Si, se puede," and "God is with us."
Sen. Anitere Flores, a Miami Republican, sponsored an earlier Senate bill, but Haridopolos said he wanted a stronger version and gave it to Senate Budget Chairman JD Alexander last week.
Alexander, however, a Lake Wales Republican and grower, has expressed reservations about any bill that limits immigration, saying Florida farmers rely on immigrant labor.
"In a perfect world we would control our borders, and I believe we should, (but) folks have been here through essentially tacit permission of the government for decades. It seems challenging to suddenly ask them to not be here," Alexander said last week.
The House has already passed a tougher Arizona-style bill that makes it a second-degree misdemeanor to be in Florida without legal residency and authorizes police to check a person's immigration status after an arrest.

There already is a state statute allowing farmers to hire migrant workers. It states that the migrant needs to be here legally and the farmer has to post the labor laws in their native language. In other words they cannot exploit their workers when they hire illegals they can do what they want. Sheriff's tried to enforce that law but Bill McCollum stopped that years ago and probably due to this guy. I just looked it up and found a federal law that states you need the migrant workers SSN so that means they have to be here on a visa. That is why farmers accept and even provide fake ones. Here is the link.

Florida Immigration Bill With E-Verify Could See Tuesday Vote
May 2, 2011 11:31 PM
TALLAHASSEE (CBS4/NSF) – A state immigration bill that would require employers in Florida to use the federal e-Verify system to check potential employees immigration status appears dead for 2011, but an alternate version that protects employers who use E-verify, but does not require them to do so, may emerge Tuesday.
Florida Senate leaders are trying to work out details of a bill that would allow law enforcement officials to seek the immigration status of only those they arrest, a stricter standard than a House proposal that allow suspects to be screened.
Speaking to reporters Monday, Senate President Mike Haridopolos said he hoped to have a vote on the immigration bill Tuesday, a pledge his rules chairman said was likely but no slam dunk.
Haridopolos repeated that recipients of financial assistance and other state services should be screened for immigrant status. He also said that employers who choose not to use E-verify, a federal immigration database, would run the risk of criminal and civil penalties.
The statement appears to back up the notion that the Senate would not require employers to use the system that has come under fire from some quarters for being inaccurate.
If the senate approved the version being discussed, it would have to reconcile with the House proposal (HB 7089) that would allow officials to seek immigrant status on suspects of criminal investigation, an easier threshold to reach House members have been waiting for the Senate to move on the issue. SB 2040 is scheduled for debate on Tuesday but language has not been finalized.
