Mexican authorities announced a raid at two cartel training camps in Ciudad Mier as well as several other ammunition and weapons stash houses there and in Reynosa.

According to information released by the Tamaulipas government, the Mexican army conducted four separate raids in Ciudad Mier, which is just across the Rio Grande from Roma.

Two of the four raids in Mier were aimed at two training camps in rural areas used by members of organized crime; at the camps authorities seized three assault rifles and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition.

The other two raids in Ciudad Mier resulted in the seizure of more than a dozen assault rifles and close to 6,000 rounds of ammunition.

Although the news release didn’t identify a criminal organization, the area south of Starr, Hidalgo and Cameron counties has historically been under the control of the Gulf Cartel, an international crime syndicate involved in drug smuggling, human smuggling, kidnapping, extortion and murder for hire.

The news release also pointed to two weapons seizures in Reynosa. In one of the seizures, the Mexican army seized six abandoned vehicles and 730 ammunition rounds near a building along Libramiento Sur highway.

The other seizure took place in the Los Longoria rural area, where members of organized crime had hidden six rifles and close to 13,000 ammunition rounds in water well. Also inside the well, authorities found 15 pounds of marijuana and gun parts.

No arrests were reported by authorities.
