Immigrants Pull Weight in Economy, Study Finds

Another pro-immigration article today. Didn't find this as a previous post in search.

Immigrants Pull Weight in Economy, Study Finds
    By PATRICK McGEEHAN
    Published: November 26, 2007
Immigrants contribute nearly one-fourth of the economic output of New York State, and outside of New York City, they are overrepresented in some of the most critical occupations, including higher education and health care, according to a study to be released today.

Go to City Room » In the suburbs north and east of the city, about 4 of every 10 doctors and more than one-fourth of college professors were foreign-born, the study by the private Fiscal Policy Institute found. In upstate New York, where just 5 percent of residents are foreign-born, immigrants accounted for about one-fifth of the professors and more than one-third of the doctors, according to the study.

The study, conducted over the past year, concluded that the contributions of people born outside the country have spread far beyond the low-wage, low-skill work often associated with immigrants. Most immigrants meld into New York communities, learn to speak English and buy homes, it found. The institute is an independent research organization that focuses on public policy in New York State.

    Hmmm... Just a thought

If they 'pull their own weight' then why does the weight on MY back- and YOURS - keep getting heavier and heavier?

    Another point..

This author, this study, should realize you can't lump Legal Immigrants and Illegal Aliens into the same study and get true results. LEGAL immigrants are entitled to/burdened with the same things U.S. born AMERICANS are. ILLEGAL ALIENS aren't entitled to anything in this country, and their burdens- they bring those on themselves.

I think they are talking legal immigrants - but I wonder how many of them are HB workers.

Also, I do remember during the Clinton administration some discussion that we had too many doctors in America. There was a proposal to pay medical schools an amount equal to the tution for them to NOT graduate doctors.

We keep hearing we have a shortage of nurses in this country and they are bringing in thousands. Yet, I read an article in Time or Newsweek not long ago that there aren't enough nursing schools in the country. It was an article on American students going abroad to get their nurses training.

Anyone getting the picture that Americans are deliberately being shut out of job training - and therefore jobs??

Just more propaganda. Be thankful we have talk radio and the new media to cut through this biased nonsense pushed by liberal New York Times editors.

See this article from this summer about Rector's much more credible analysis:

Researcher finds illegal immigrants are a net economic liability

Good point- It does make one wonder about the H1B's.
But note below, the article states both legal and illegals were used in the study.

The study included foreign-born New York residents who have lived in the country for decades, as well as new arrivals, and included legal and illegal immigrants to capture the full immigrant experience, Mr. Kallick said.

Yeah I want him to tell this BS to those who must drive a long way for medical treatment due to hospital closings because of Illegal Immigrants hospital bill non-payment,or the person whose ID was stolen and is having to deal with all the problems associated with ID theft or the parents of the little 3yr. old who was raped by a Illegal Alien who has Aides or the family of those killed by Illegal Alien drunk drivers...........

You can't mix Legal and Illegals into one group, they are NOT the same.

If you want to confuse an idiot with facts, ask them this:

If nobody has an even nearly accurate count of illegals in this country, and they're not reporting and paying taxes on their earnings, how can you get data on their true economic impact?

While there is no way to show how much their cheap, unskilled labor might benefit this nation, it might be possible to quantify the cost by way of social programs, free health care and education, etc., IF the traitors in our government would not hide that information.

They just want to play with the word immigrant. Illegal aliens do nothing but hurt the USA, legal immigrants do pull their weight as well as take the punches for those here illegally.

It's time to put a stop to this illegal alien = immigrant crap. They are illegal aliens abusing our system using their race as a crutch, nothing more, nothing less.

I welcome EVERY legal immigrant. They work VERY hard to assimilate into our culture and strive to be the best.

How about this La Raza.. "For the legal immigrant, everything. For the illegal alien, nothing!"

This type of research needs to start aggregating out the data in terms of legal and illegal immigrants-without that type of distinction, the data is null and void as it relates to the positive or negative effects of illegal immigration. Again, as we all understand and discuss a great deal, legal and illegal immigration are not synonymous nor are their effects.
