Ted Cruz and Obama have a lot in common. They both have fathers who were not citizens. Ted Cruz was not even born in the US, although it is pretty clear that Obama was, because that's where his mother was when he was born. (Connect the dots there.) Ted Cruz's indifference to his own US citizenship is what drove a lot of outrage against his candidacy for the Republican nomination, myself included.
That is one view. Their common interest now is their disdain or hatred for Trump. Cruz could have flown back sooner and who else (Rubio) just recently flew on Air Force One to Florida after the Orlando massacre. Doesn't matter much to me, I liked Cruz and supported his platform as a candidate against illegal immigration. His actions at the RNC were despicable and his ride to Dallas could have been nothing more than a conversation about Trump and these guys are high level professionals so big deal. How the hell is anything supposed to get done in this country if the politicians can't even hang out and converse for a couple of hours in a bi-partisan spirit on an airplane or in the oval office like Tip O'Neil and Ronnie.

In the end, Cruz submitted a script to the RNC and ditched it for his own words at the convention. An airplane ride is visual and explainable, an endorsement would have squared Cruz with his pledge and made the flight nothing more than a ride to Dallas on Air Force One. He certainly is not a middle child constantly aiming to please!
