Immigration officers arrest ‘African tribe’ in Scottish woodlands

An “African tribe” camping in Scottish woodland has been evicted by immigration enforcement officers.
Two members of the three-person group, calling themselves the “Kingdom of Kubala”, were arrested as sheriff and police officers attended their camp near Jedburgh in the Borders region.

The self-proclaimed King Atehene, otherwise known as Kofi Offeh, 36, of Ghana, and 21-year-old Kaura Taylor, an American “handmaiden” who calls herself Asnat were arrested.
Mr Offeh was told he was being arrested for overstaying and was driven off in a van for questioning, with Ms Taylor taken handcuffed into another van.
Both are being interviewed, and all officers have now safely left the site.
Mr Offeh’s 43-year-old Zimbabwean wife, Jean Gasho, who calls herself Queen Nandi, was given an hour to gather her belongings before she was driven away by a local friend in a pick-up truck.
Ms Gasho filmed the arrests and posted footage on her TikTok page on Thursday morning showing a man and woman being led from the forest.
It is understood the arrests were not made by Police Scotland.

The three members of the so-called “kingdom” claimed they were taking back land stolen from their ancestors 400 years ago.

After their departure from the woodlands, two vehicles from Scottish Borders council arrived to clear the rubbish left behind in their makeshift camp.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We assisted our partner agencies in the Oxnan Road area of Jedburgh on Thursday, Oct 2 2025.”
Scott Hamilton, a local councillor and deputy leader of Scottish Borders council, said he was “very much relieved” the evictions had finally taken place.

The three were served with an eviction notice last month, when they were living on private land near their more recent campsite.
David Palmer complained the three were a nuisance on his land and took legal steps to have them removed.
The “tribe” then moved their campsite over a fence to a neighbouring plot owned by Scottish Borders council.

On Wednesday, Sheriff Peter Paterson issued an immediate eviction order to the tribe. None of the group’s members were present at Jedburgh sheriff court.
The group refused to recognise the powers of the courts to evict them and said they would not be paying the legal costs awarded against them in the case, which are now into five figures.

Mr Offeh, a former opera singer, claims to be the king of a lost tribe descended from the Bible’s King David.
He previously said: “The Kingdom of Kubala cannot be destroyed, for we are helped by the creator of the heavens and the earth, our God. Until then, no one will be able to destroy the Kingdom of Kubala.

“We follow the laws of the creator. Everything belongs to the ones who made it. We do not believe that any authority owns the land. The earth belongs to the father.”
A Home Office spokesman said: “It would not be appropriate to comment while an investigation is ongoing.”
