Congressman: Immigration stance led to snub by GOP
Memphis conference says it wanted only top-tier presidential candidates
By BILL THEOBALD
Tennessean Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON — Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo, a Republican and a leading advocate for tougher immigration laws, claims that he is being intentionally excluded from this weekend's big GOP gathering in Memphis.
But officials with the Tennessee Republican Party, who organized the Southern Republican Leadership Conference that starts today, claim nothing of the sort and say neither Tancredo nor his staff has contacted them. A spokesman for Tancredo said contacts were made.
"Congressman Tancredo was snubbed by some party leaders who still refuse to confront the immigration issue head on," said Will Adams, a Tancredo spokesman. "They can keep Congressman Tancredo off the main stage, but they will not be able to do the same with the issue."
Chris Devaney, executive director of the Tennessee Republican Party, said most of those invited to speak were from the South and that none was a member of the U.S. House. "We chose primarily national leaders who are considered to be top presidential contenders in 2008."
"Nothing against him, but we had a tight program," Devaney said.
The conference, which is expected to be one of the largest gatherings of Republicans before the 2008 national convention, will include speeches from six men who are eyeing a White House bid, including U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist.
Tancredo is chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus and has taken a tough stand focusing on enforcement to slow illegal immigration and on opposing amnesty for people in the country illegally.
Tancredo is not considered in the top tier of Republicans who may run for president, but he would consider it, Adams said. "He will run for president if other Republican candidates don't take up the issue (immigration) that is in a manner with our conservative values," he said. •

I sent an email and told them that I thought those TOP picks for president were just a choice between evils. A bunch of globalists.
They'll think I'm a crackpot.

I've told these dingalings many times that Tom Tancredo is the only Republican I'd even consider voting for as President of the US again. So it is no surprise to them that our guy has some backing.
