Texas governor says state will reject refugees, becoming first state to decline reset

Texas governor says state will reject refugees, becoming first state to decline resettlement under Trump executive order

HOUSTON (AP) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says the state will reject the re-settlement of new refugees, becoming the first state known to do so under a recent Trump administration order.

In a letter released Friday, Abbott wrote that Texas “has been left by Congress to deal with disproportionate migration issues resulting from a broken federal immigration system.”

He added that Texas, which typically takes in thousands of refugees each year, has done "more than its share.”

The Trump administration announced in November that resettlement agencies must get written consent from state and local officials in any jurisdiction where they want to help resettle refugees beyond June 2020.

Governors in 42 other states have said they will consent to allowing in more refugees, according to the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service.

Texas Governor Announces the State Will Not Be Accepting Any More Refugees, Becomes First in Nation to Decline Them

    January 19, 2020

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced that the state will not be participating in the federal refugee resettlement program, becoming the first state in the nation to do so.

Governor Abbott cited concerns about the border as part of his decision to decline allowing refugees to resettle in the state.

The Texas newspaper Statesman reported on Friday that in a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Abbott said he “cannot consent to initial refugee resettlement” in 2020.

The letter was in response to an executive order signed by President Donald Trump that allows states and local governments to consent before refugees can be resettled there.

“This decision does not deny any refugee access to the United States. Nor does it preclude a refugee from later coming to Texas after initially settling in another state,” Abbott wrote.

Abbott continued on to explain that Texas can’t accept additional refugees this year because Congress has left the state “to deal with disproportionate migration issues resulting from a broken federal immigration system.”

“Texas continues to have to deal with the consequences of an immigration system that Congress has failed to fix,” Abbott added.

The Statesman reports that Governor Abbott faced serious pressure from city leaders and refugee advocacy groups to participate in the program, but they did not sway him.

More refugees have previously been settled in Texas than any other state. Over the last decade, Texas has received approximately 10% of all refugees resettled in the US.

“In 2016, roughly 7,800 refugees resettled in the state, or 9% of refugees arriving in the U.S., according to Church World Service. That number dropped by roughly 3,000 people the following year. In 2019, Texas resettled 2,458 refugees, according to the group,” the Statesman report continues.

Thank you Governor Abbott. “America First.” Citizens and taxpayers first. In my opinion, help people near home. Those who help us in war do not need to be brought here. We carry the military and financial load for the world so other “safe” countries can take people if they desire.

    Mass Refugee resettlement brings:

    Balkanization,

    The possibility of terror,

    Chain migration,

    More people who hate America,

The fleecing of citizen tax dollars,

Advocacy for socialist and religious ideas that are harmful to our country

More people to join the George Soros funded organizations and other radical groups who don’t want immigration laws enforced and who name call American citizens who do,

    Fraud, crime, gangs, fear,

Pandering by politicians willing to use refugees and illegal aliens against America’s future.

The United Nations should have no say in who comes to the United States.

    EXACTLY GeorgiaPeach!

Why should WE take people that "help" us????

They should STAY HOME and help their own country...not flee and leave more bad people behind!

They need to stay home and effect change...or it will NEVER change!

We do not want them here!!!

They should say "thank you" USA, and WE pass the baton to them. NOT bring them here!
