There’s All Sorts Of GOP Infighting Over Salazar’s Amnesty, Er, Dignity Act Or Something

    It’s exploding, you guys!
Sudden GOP infighting explodes over bipartisan immigration reform bill
Sudden outrage over a long-shot bipartisan immigration reform bill sparked a public battle among House Republicans, fueled by an onslaught of online activists, that’s putting GOP divides over immigration policy squarely into the spotlight.
The bill in question, the Dignity Act, is not new and has little chance of getting a vote in this Congress. But pent-up frustration from conservatives over President Trump delivering on mass deportations and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown turned into a pile-on over the bill.
It’s also highlighting the division between moderate Republicans aiming to combat a decline in support for the GOP among the Hispanic and Latino voters who helped propel the party to victory in 2024, and hard-liners who argue the bill would be a betrayal of promises made to voters.
At the center of the uproar is Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-Fla.), the bill’s designer who has for years advocated for immigration reform, a position that is often lonely in today’s Republican Party. Her Dignity Act is largely in the vein of compromise immigration policy bills that have come before it.
The whole thing is horrible, as I covered back in 2025 when she started pushing this garbage. Hers is about as bad as Alex Padilla’s easy amnesty bill. At the end of the there are 20 Democrats who are cosponsors of Salazar’s “it’s really not amnesty” amnesty bill, while only 19 Republicans. That’s not a good thing, Maria!
Under Salazar’s plan, those in the country illegally prior to 2021 — and who do not have criminal records — would have to pay $7,000 in restitution and any back taxes owed and would also not be eligible for welfare programs, but they would get a new legal status. The bill itself would not provide them a path to citizenship.
Salazar insists the bill would not amount to amnesty because it provides no path to citizenship — but it has been labeled as such by many Republicans and conservatives, who say giving any relief to migrants without legal status amounts to “amnesty.”
Democrats would love this, since if the illegals have legal status they will be able to vote in many local, county, and state elections. Which tend to be at the same time as federal elections, and, whoops, if they happen to fill out the parts for federal positions, bummer. And they won’t be voting GOP, Maria. And then Dems will say “well, they’re here, they paid that money, we should give them citizenship.”
Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas) has been among the most vocal in slamming the bill, including by duking it out with Salazar on social media.
“This is the kind of Orwellian doublespeak we expect from the Left, not our own party,” Gill said in a post replying to Salazar, noting the bill is officially called the DIGNIDAD Act. “We are not living under an amnesty regime, and it’s dishonest to say we are.”
“Our only objective right now should be to speed up deportations by equipping ICE and DHS with the funding and resources they need. The DIGNIDAD Act does the opposite. It would give legal status to 12 million illegal aliens, while hamstringing deportation efforts for the rest,” Gill said.
This is the kind of squishy stuff pulled by George W. Bush, John McCain, Lindsay Graham, and other illegals squishes. Let’s deport them, not give more a reason to stream to the U.S.
In the Lawler interview that seemed to ignite backlash last week, Fox News host Brian Kilmeade commented that he thought Trump could be open to the bill, saying the president had told him he would be interested in “long-term work visas” for migrants.
I would be fine with short term visas, like there used to be, where they came, worked for a bit, then went back to their home countries. Then do it again. Their families did not come with. They were migrant workers. Not give legal status for breaking federal law. The immigration system is not broken, it’s the people running it and allowing insane amounts into the US who are broken. Shut it down. Deport. Have a fully lawful temporary system, and let those who want to be US citizens and demonstrate so apply.

Furor over the bill reached a fever pitch last week after co-sponsor Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) advocated for it in a weekend Fox News appearance.

Numerous Republican members slammed the bill as “amnesty,” and influential commentators and conservative social media accounts expressed outrage over the bill.
Salazar said in an interview that she thinks the uproar is a sign of the bill “gaining momentum.”
“It’s the only immigration reform law in the United States Congress,” Salazar said. “The problem here is that people cannot open their mouth before reading the bill, and that’s what happens, unfortunately, when it comes to immigration.”
“What does amnesty mean? … Amnesty is what they have now. The illegals have now free roads, free schools, free hospitals, because they don’t pay for anything,” Salazar said.

Salazar shot back by noting the GOP’s decline in support among Hispanic voters in the 2025 elections: “PRESIDENT TRUMP didn’t win by shrinking the tent. He EXPANDED it. That’s how you build a coalition.”

Salazar said she has not talked directly about the bill with her colleagues who have been slamming it, and that she plans to reach out to Gill specifically when the House is back in session this week “to explain what the bill does.” And she is planning a “massive press conference” this week with the National Association of Manufacturers, which has endorsed the bill as a way to address work shortages.
In the Lawler interview that seemed to ignite backlash last week, Fox News host Brian Kilmeade commented that he thought Trump could be open to the bill, saying the president had told him he would be interested in “long-term work visas” for migrants.
Lawler returned to the network on Laura Ingraham’s show a few days later for what the host said from the top would “not be a fun interview.”
“The border was the biggest problem. President Trump ran and won on that issue. He said he would stop illegal immigration into the country. He has effectively done that,” Lawler said. “Secondarily, is to deal with the undocumented that are in this country. Get them out of the shadows.”

But the interview largely devolved into cross talk as Ingraham repeatedly asserted Lawler was misrepresenting his own bill when he talked about migrants who would be ineligible for benefits.
“OK, that’s false. False, false, false,” Ingraham interjected.
“There are several crimes that are ‘nonviolent’ that do not qualify for inadmissibility. And on top of that, there are multiple instances — including family unity, public interest, and just discretion on the part of immigration officers” who can grant waivers to those requirements, Ingraham argued.
Ingraham had Gill on as a guest the following night, where he argued the Dignity Act was an “unforgivable political betrayal” of those who voted for Trump.

“This isn’t just an amnesty bill. It’s far worse. This is just a straight-up mass migration bill,” Gill said.
David Bier, director of immigration studies at the libertarian think tank the Cato Institute, was surprised by the amount of backlash suddenly generated against the bill — but he also saw it as exposing a rift in the party as polling shows the public turning against Trump’s hard-line immigration enforcement.
“It’s about putting pressure on the president to continue down the same path that [White House deputy chief of staff] Stephen Miller wants them to be on. I think the messaging right now going into the midterms is that immigration policy is a liability and that they need to soften on this. And of course, the right wing is not enthusiastic about that,” Bier said.
Salazar and Lawler are both up for reelection in competitive districts Democrats hope to flip. And Salazar’s district includes a high population of Latino voters, who polling also shows are moving away from Trump.

Members from safe districts, on the other hand, are “more interested in signaling to their base that they’re fighting for mass deportation,” Bier said. “I think there’s even a part of the right wing that would want to see these members lose, so the party is pure on the issue.”
It’s not clear, though, that the uproar is leading to political consequences for the bill’s co-sponsors. The office of one co-sponsor told The Hill that while there was an uptick in constituent interactions over the Dignity Act due to the social media backlash, it was much lower than inquiries about the Iran war and DHS funding, and lower than a typical uptick that coincides with top news items.
Plus, advocates for the bill say Trump is not as staunchly anti-legal status as many of the conservatives. Trump told The New York Times in January that some industries still need immigrant labor, and he said he would “love to be able to create an immigration policy that works for everyone” and have “a comprehensive immigration policy,” “possibly” including a path to citizenship for migrants without legal status.
Salazar said that the prospects for her bill, or any compromise like it, ultimately rest with Trump and the White House.

“I have spoken with the powers that be, but at the end, this is in the hands of the president,” Salazar said. “Like I’ve always said, he could be for immigration what Lincoln was for slavery. It’s up to him.”
