Parents of dead girl make plea deal
They will be freed, deported to Mexico

A plea deal yesterday allowed a Forsyth County couple accused of abusing their twin 4-month-old daughters, one of whom later died, to get out of jail and be deported to Mexico.

Viridiana Rojas Arrellano, 22, and Victor Lobato Cruz, 24, each entered an Alford plea to two counts of felony child abuse inflicting serious injury.

An Alford plea allows them to maintain their innocence while acknowledging that the state has enough evidence to get a conviction.

A brain injury led to the death of one of the girls, Beverly Lobato Rojas, but a medical examiner was unable to link her death to any child abuse.

Because the case was not ruled a homicide, prosecutors pursued only the child-abuse charges, prosecutor David Hall said.
