Bruce McPherson quits GOP as he seeks seat on Santa Cruz board

Bruce McPherson quits GOP as he seeks seat on Santa Cruz board

Bruce McPherson, a former state legislator and secretary of state who is now seeking a seat on the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors, is quitting the Republican Party, citing the "strident" nature of partisan politics.

"That's who I am," McPherson was quoted in a San Jose Mercury-News article. "During my years in the California Legislature, I was widely recognized as the most independent voice in either the Assembly or the Senate. Now more than ever I think we need leaders who make decisions for the community and the people, not what's best for the party."

"It's as strident as I've ever known it to be," McPherson said of partisan politics. "I don't want to be identified as right or left."

McPherson is a moderate former Santa Cruz Sentinel editor who had been hailed as the only Republican who can win in heavy Democratic Santa Cruz County. He's now locked in a runoff duel with Democrat Eric Hammer, having failed by 48 votes to achieve an outright majority and election in the June 5 primary election. But he says his decision to re-register as a "declined to state" voter is not connected to his looming runoff.

We need more politicians who put the people and the country ahead of their party.

Yes, and while I agree with the line quoted by McPherson, I think he has an ulterior motive as they all do. I'll believe it when and if I see some action that truly DOES help the "community and people." When I hear lines like that, in my mind, it translates to "pandering."

While what you say is true, forgive me for being extremely skeptical of McPherson's motives. I believe the man is exiting from the Republican Party because he knows a Republican will not get elected in the district. I'm with SicNTiredInSoCal in believing he probably supports the illegal and gay agenda.

Forgive me William for this, but I cannot let these sort of comments simply go unchallenged around here. First of all, good riddance that this guy has left this sad excuse of a party. Whatever his motive is, anything that hurts these two pathetic parties I'm fully behind. Second, illegals I agree with, but what exactly is wrong with a town having gay people in it??? I absolutely despise seeing hateful comments like these being made and no one standing up against them, and it's not just here. I got news for you SicNTriedInSoCal, lesbians and gay men are people like you and I and I sure as hell would prefer them over ignorant people in my city. Imagine if he had said "blacks" instead, surely administrative action would have been taken (and rightfully so).

    Googler,

This is the United States and free speech is still in effect for the time being. The person that mentioned lesbians may not be hateful. I did not see "I hate lesbians" and there are towns that are full of lesbians and many other demographics.

And even if this person does not like lesbians, he or she is a free American citizen that is free to like or dislike anyone or anything they like and desires to censor them, rebuke them, hound them, pound them, or otherwise pressure them because of how they feel is authoritarian and at the roots of what we face from the illegal alien invasion supporters actively trying to silence this entire website.

It would only be unlawful for this commentator to advocate any kind of harmful actions towards a protected status group.

My main concern would be, is it factual? Is the town full of illegal immigrants and lesbians and if so why should we allow someone to mention one factor but not another?

I used to care a lot more about these sensitivies Googler, but I'm way beyond all that now after seeing how these "sensitivities" are being used to destroy this country.

Fine, their both facts, but the manner in which he presents the facts just doesn't jive well with me. Illegal aliens broke the law and it is fine for someone to say, "Beautiful city, but FULL of law breakers." Who wouldn't be upset that there are people who broke the law living in their area? On the other hand, saying, "Beautiful city, but FULL of Blacks" for instance, you get the feeling that the person is perhaps upset that their city has been over run by Blacks. I don't know. Maybe you're right and he doesn't hate lesbians, but I think you just have to be careful with the way you present facts if that's what your intending to do, especially when you have such a diverse (I imagine) group of people on here.

    Googler,

I certainly appreciate you, and everyone that tries to keep ALIPAC open and welcoming to Americans of every race, background, and walk of life.

I'll be glad to weigh any comments like these as will our volunteer mods. Please address concerns to the mods in private messages as we request in our rules.

And Googler, you have very close to the epicenter of a lot of drama on the boards recently.

Could you do us all a big favor and focus on interacting here on the boards without generating any friction or conflict for a bit. Please, no more posts criticizing other users or comments or anything like that for awhile. If you have concerns, send them to our mods or directly to me and do not engage the other board members in an adversarial way.

We really need to keep everyone's focus on what we have in common and the challenges in front of us right now.

We are cleaning our boards up quite a bit and we will take it from here.

    Thanks,

    W

Agreed. This poster is extremely sensitive to any thing he or she perceives as being negative towards gays.

It's a fact that this town is WELL KNOWN for these two demographics. Gays tend to vote liberal, liberals tend to support illegals and big govt....get the picture, googler?

I think this is obvious to most of us here at ALIPAC even tho the point was totally lost on googler. I will continue to exercise my right to free speech while staying, to the best of my ability, within the parameters and guidelines set forth by ALIPAC.
