Truck rolls over man after he cuts brake line

A 49-year-old Fallbrook man was run over by a truck after he cut its brake line because he believed that the owner of the truck was courting his wife, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Leopaldo Lopez was arrested Oct. 10 on various charges, including vandalism, after he cut the brake line of a black Toyota pickup belonging to Francisco Martin, 45, about 7:10 p.m. in the 300 block of Aviation Road in Fallbrook, said Lt. Robert Haley.

Lopez was still under the truck when it began rolling backward down the driveway, Haley said.

Lopez suffered only minor injuries.

When deputies questioned him, the suspect said he was angry at Martin because Martin had been giving his estranged wife rides home from citizenship classes.

Lopez had also called earlier and left a death threat on Martin's answering machine, according to the Sheriff's Department.

During initial questioning, Lopez claimed that he did not have an ID, Haley said.

Deputies later found out he had an outstanding arrest warrant for domestic violence, assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping his estranged wife.

Lopez was booked into the Vista jail. Immigration authorities placed a hold on him, according to the jail's website.
