For any of you who saw any of the reports yesterday of Truckers rolling into Washington this weekend with handcuffs to make arrests...they are not entirely true. US News and World Report interviewed a guy that was not in a position to be a spokesperson. He has his own ideas but does not speak for the organizers. So these reports of purposely congesting highways and taking congressmen away in handcuffs are nothing more than the ideas of one gentleman. Here's the problem. US News reported that and Drudge then picked it up. The Blaze and WND (that I know of) ran with the story and now there is all kinds of misinformation floating around. It certainly rose awareness for the cause but did not accurately represent the cause. I am just passing on what I know. -Dean

Capital Beltway shutdown just a ploy for attention, trucker says

It can be hard to get attention for your agenda in a town like Washington, but Georgia trucker Earl Conlon figured out a way: Take the Beltway hostage.

Conlon’s comments in a U.S. News & World Report story that he and thousands of truckers from across the country (and possibly Canada) planned to come to D.C. on Friday and bring traffic to a standstill on the inner loop of the Capital Beltway zinged across the Web, picked up by outlets ranging from Fox News to the Huffington Post. The rally was dubbed “Truckers for the Constitution.”

Earl Conlon says a threat by thousands of truckers to tie up traffic on the Beltway was part of a stunt to draw attention to Washington's dysfunctional politicians.

But alas, it is all a hoax.

“The comments to U.S. News were designed to do one thing and one thing only: stir the feather of the mainstream media,” said Conlon, a father of three. “Nothing gets the attention of the mainstream media like some sort of disastrous threat. I knew it was going to ruffle some feathers.”

So while thousands of truckers may indeed come to Washington on Friday and many of them may travel along the inner loop of the Beltway, honking their horns, they won’t intentionally shut down traffic, he said.

“First of all, we know it would not be right to go to D.C. to lock down the city by the Belt loop,” said Conlon, 50, a veteran truck driver who has suffered through more than his share of traffic jams. “That wouldn’t be fair to the people there.”

In fact, Conlon is not sure that he will even make it to town on Friday.

Even so, he figures that he has already scored a small victory: attention for his cause — mainly the overreach of government and the inability for politicians to follow the rules as outlined in the Constitution.

Take the current government shutdown.

“We would not be having this conversation if government was balancing this budget,” he said.

His solution: Take their perks away, and pay them minimum wage until the budget gets balanced.

“Then, I think you’d see some action,’’ he said.

State Police Prepare for Truckers' Protest on Beltway

Conflicting reports continue about whether the event is a hoax, but Virginia State Police will have increased presence during the proposed "Ride for the Constitution" Friday morning.

Virginia State Police are taking seriously the reports that hundreds of commercial independent truckers plan to flood the Capital Beltway Friday morning.

"Truckers Ride for the Constitution," a convoy of large commercial transport trucks, may be crowding the Inner Loop of I-495 Friday morning.

The truck drivers reportedly are protesting a number of issues, from pay to gas prices, government regulations on their industry, recent practices of the National Security Administration (NSA) and the country’s financial status, The Hill reported.

Whether the plan is a hoax remains unclear at this point. One truck driver, Earl Conlon, has told media outlets the plan for thousands of trucks to descend on the Beltway really is a hoax, but Ride for the Constitution organizers say Conlon does not speak for the organization and the ride is still on.

The Ride for the Constitution Facebook page now has more than 118,000 fans — approximately double the number of fans it had Monday. Even if the plan is a hoax, there could be increased traffic from truck drivers who are taking the event seriously.

The following is the entire Virginia State Police official statement:
Virginia State Police is aware of the proposed convoy of commercial vehicles and is preparing accordingly with the region’s law enforcement agencies and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), just as we have done in the past for similar demonstrations held within the National Capital Region.

As long as the vehicles comply with Virginia law, then the Virginia State Police will not interfere with their activities.

VSP will have additional troopers working Friday and on through the weekend in Northern Virginia to respond to any incidents that may arise – traffic crashes, disabled vehicles, etc. – in order to expedite clearance of the highways and keep traffic moving safely throughout the region.
