I go along with 'cut the monies to illegals - refugees - foreign aid", etc. I think the government could be cut 20% - and I don't mean in services - but in expenses and we,the people, would not even feel it.
Does the VA really need a decorator?
Does the VA really need to buy artwork and sculptures - especially for a hospital for the blind?
Does any government department actually need an 'events planner'?
Do they need to have so many 'seminars', when internet hookup could be used?
Do congresscritters really need to take so many 'fact-finding' trips? To they really need to take their family and friends along? Are those trips actually to places where 'facts' are needed to be found - or maybe to some destination the politician wants to take his family for a government paid vacation?
Now, since I live and always have lived in a rural area, I do see government monies making life - better maybe - for some.
Again, there are so many things this government spends money on they should not and I can understand saying - 'cut this first' and be right.
The fact is, Boys and Girls Club, Senior Centers, Endowment for the Arts, etc., etc., is not the business of the government - it just isn't.
Where are the 'volunteers'? Not those that get paid to volunteer or get their expenses paid, but those who give their time, money, resources? Where are the churches in all this? This seems like the very things churches today should be doing. Instead they are busing the elderly to Bransom, casinos, taking kids to Six Flags, hosting Super Bowl Parties, etc.
Maybe that community wants all those things, they could get together and see if the churches, businesses, and people themselves couldn't do it.
Again, there are a lot of things this government should not be doing, but when we suggest the government 'should be--', we need to ask ourselves - should it, really?
As for those 'old brick streets'. The best thing they could do is get all that asphalt off those bricks and use them. Some cities in Texas have done just that. They have lasted many decades. Yes, they are slick when wet - but we drove on them, without much peril for a long time.
So, maybe we, rural or otherwise might look to ourselves to solve our problems and not the government. That is what happened when the government came up with the idea that they would tax the people more and give some back to the states. That was another line with a fish hook on it. The people became addicted to government monies. There are cities that have paid positions who do nothing but seek out and write grants for government monies, small towns, I mean.
When the idea of 'the government should--" came into being, churches, many (most) of us suddenly lost our charitable feelings and givings - be it time or monies. We thought the government was doing it.
I think that was the idea. Now that the monies are being threatened, we can't seem to remember how we did these things before.
Well, we had better start remembering.
