President Donald Trump’s remarks on Somali immigrants have drawn sharp backlash from Minnesota officials, who condemned the comments as inflammatory and discriminatory. Minnesota State Sen. Zaynab Mohamed (D) noted that most Somali residents are U.S. citizens.
The Trump administration has expressed plans to end Temporary Protected Status for Somali residents. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) criticized the move as a “public relations stunt.”
Trump said, “These are people that do nothing but complain and complain. And from where they came from, they got nothing. We don’t want them in our country. Let them go back to where they came from and fix it. Thank you very much.”

Trump added, “With Somalia, which is barely a country, you know, they have no, they have no anything. They just run around killing each other. There’s no structure.”
Mohamed said, “When ICE agents interact with Somalis here, they will find what we’ve been saying for years: Almost all of us are US citizens.”
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem called for stricter measures, including possible travel bans.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) said, “It’s disgusting. It’s completely disgusting. These are Americans that he is calling garbage. And we feel like there is an unhealthy obsession that he has on the Somali community, and an unhealthy and creepy obsession that he has with me.”
Omar added, “I think it is also really important for us to remember that this kind of hateful rhetoric and this level of dehumanizing can lead to dangerous actions by people who listen to the president.”
