Border Czar Tom Homan has vowed to dismantle Mexican drug cartels, promising to "wipe them off the face of the Earth" by targeting their financial networks.
Speaking to Fox News’ Jesse Watters, Homan emphasized that cutting off the cartels’ money supply is key to ending their reign of terror, which has fueled a drug overdose crisis claiming 100,000 American lives annually. The Trump administration’s aggressive approach aims to disrupt cartels’ ability to bribe officials and operate globally, signaling a new era of financial warfare against transnational criminal organizations.
Homan, a former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), outlined the administration’s strategy, which includes increasing Coast Guard patrols to counter maritime drug trafficking and expanding operations to 43 countries where cartels operate. "If you put them out of business—you take their money away—they can’t buy or bribe Mexican officials. Without money, they have no power," Homan said.
A global fight against cartels
The Trump administration has designated Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, a move that allows for unprecedented financial and military action. Homan revealed that the administration is actively discussing potential U.S. military strikes on cartel targets in Mexico, though such actions would require coordination with the Mexican government. However, Homan warned that if cartels threaten American border agents or military personnel, President Trump will act decisively. "President Trump will wipe them off the face of the Earth," he said.
This hardline stance has already yielded results. Homan reported a 95% reduction in illegal immigrant "gotaways" along the 2,000-mile southern border, with only 48 individuals escaping detection in a single day—down from 1,800 daily in 2023. "I’m not going to be happy till that number’s zero," Homan said at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).
Saving lives by securing the border
Homan highlighted the broader impact of securing the border, noting that fewer crossings mean fewer lives lost to fentanyl overdoses, human trafficking, and violent crime. "When you have a border lockdown, we’re saving lives," he said. The administration’s efforts have also led to the arrest of 21,000 illegal aliens in Trump’s first month in office, including members of violent gangs like Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua and El Salvador’s MS-13.
The border czar also took aim at sanctuary cities, vowing to enforce immigration laws without apology. "Sanctuary cities are a sanctuary for criminals," Homan said, calling out Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox for releasing child rapists rather than honoring ICE detainers. "I’m coming to Boston, and I’m bringing hell with me," he warned.
Praise for law enforcement
Homan expressed gratitude for the men and women of ICE, Border Patrol, and other federal law enforcement agencies, calling them "the finest 1% of this country." He emphasized that their work is critical to protecting American lives and upholding the rule of law.
The Trump administration’s approach marks a stark contrast to previous policies, which Homan criticized for enabling cartels and criminal organizations. By targeting cartels’ finances and operations, the administration aims to dismantle their power structures and prevent further harm to American communities.
The Trump administration’s aggressive stance against drug cartels represents a significant shift in U.S. border policy. By cutting off cartels’ financial lifelines and expanding enforcement efforts globally, the administration is taking decisive action to protect American lives and restore order to the southern border. As Homan put it, "President Trump does not mess around with criminal terror organizations." With a focus on saving lives and upholding the rule of law, the administration’s efforts signal a new chapter in the fight against transnational crime.
