Trump election: EU leaders expect 'strong partnership' with US

    14 November 2016

European Union foreign ministers have said they expect a "very strong partnership" with the US, following an informal meeting to discuss Donald Trump's election victory.

The ministers said they needed to know details of the US president-elect's plans but said they expected good ties.

The talks took place at a dinner in Brussels on Sunday, on the eve of a formal meeting of foreign ministers.

Ministers from Britain, France and Hungary did not attend on Sunday.

"We are looking forward to a very strong partnership with the next [US] administration," EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said.

"We have decided together to engage with the incoming administration even from this very first week of transition," she added.

Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders told reporters: "Whatever the US administration, it has long been known that Europe will have to step up its action on security and defence."

During the campaign, Mr Trump suggested that the US may not automatically come to the aid of a Nato ally under attack.

Monday's formal meeting, which is being attended by ministers from all 28 member states, is due to discuss relations with Turkey and defence co-operation with Nato.

Mr Trump's election win has exposed rifts in Europe with some officials distancing themselves from discussions on future relations.

UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said on Friday that it was "time we snapped out of the general doom and gloom" over the US result, referring to negative comments as a "collective whinge-o-rama".

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said Sunday's meeting was "completely premature" and hit out at "frustrated and hysterical statements" made by other European leaders following the US election result.

The statement from the ministers contrasts sharply with comments by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, who warned on Friday that Mr Trump's election risked upsetting EU ties with the US "fundamentally and structurally".

Oh yes, we'll have a very strong relationship with all the countries in Europe. I'm not so sure we have a lot in common with the "EU" organization itself though at this point. We like dealing with countries directly.

Yes, apologies are in order but what would please the USA the most would be for France to exit the EU. Without both Great Britain and France, the EU monster will starve and need to disband. Right? I don't think the EU could function at all without France. Hope Marine Le Pen wins because she'll organize to withdraw from the EU, won't she? I think so. What do you think, EK?

I hope they can defuse the confrontation with Russia. It's a very complicated world there: crumbling Soviet empire, Islamic unrest, resurgent Russian Orthodoxy, shift to capitalism but still one party rule, US or NATO intervening but Russians can't?, self interested Russian military, oil prices gyrating, who knows what else?

So I hope Trump and Putin can further what Reagan and Gorbachev began.

Trump can and will do it, Captainron. Trump will make Russia our friend as it should be. Trump solves problems and is visionary. The Russians will love him, Putin will respect him, and together we will make a friendship that will please the citizens of both countries. After all, if we can be friends with Saudi Arabia, we can be friends with any country seems to me!

The way military technology is increasing is maddening. US still has edge, but there could be shifting alliances that numerically add researchers to the technologically savvy military strategies.

If the big leaders could inaugurate an era of trust it would be nice if this new technological arms race was dampened, just like the nuclear one was during the 1990's. This is why I hope the Republican establishment doesn't creep in too much. Vested interests have been controlling American politics, not the popular will.

Take some of the focus off the military arms race, and the world could deal with its basic problems, like housing and stable economies.

I'm still hopeful that we can eliminate nuclear weapons altogether.
