On Wednesday a 50-year-old Swedish man was convicted of “hate speech” for having “expressed contempt with reference to creed” according to Halmstad District Court.
The sentence is briefly written but considers the following comments on social media enough to judge the man:
“Muslims have always and will always solve their problems with violence”, “their honour culture requires that honour can only be sustained by force”, that Muslim communities are at a medieval level and that “they want to bring us and our societies back to their level”.
The court writes the following as justification:
As a whole, the post expresses the impression that people of Muslim beliefs would generally be violent and want to influence European societies in a negative way. The statement does not invite religion-critical discussion but instead expresses contempt in the way that the penal provisions regarding hate speech intend to meet.
The sentence imposed by the District Court will be conditional in conjunction with the payment of daily fines.
The judgment may be appealed.

Swedish TV pixelated the picture of the suspect, while the pictures can be fully seen in Norway

The Norwegian police have issued an international wanted persons notice for an earlier convicted 20-year-old Swedish citizen.
He is suspected of the murder of 24-year-old Heikki Björklund Paltto in Oslo, as well as a knife robbery. He is 20-years-old, a Swedish citizen and resides in Uppsala according to Norwegian media.
Norwegian police released photos of the suspect on Friday in an appeal to the public. They issued an international wanted persons notice, hoping for help from the public.

Swedish public service TV, however, chose to pixelate the images. The 20-year-old in the photos has previously been convicted of theft, robbery and drug offences in Sweden.
On 3 October 2017, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison, and damages of € 7000 for robbery.
The man broke into a residence in Uppsala early one morning. He went from room to room robbing the victims, who were sleeping, of their valuables.
According to the Norwegian police he was wearing a black hat and dark clothes at the time of the murder. He is about 170 centimetres tall, has brown eyes and speaks Swedish.
