Trump trip canceled; Harley-Davidson wasn't comfortable with likely protests, per source

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump will not head to Milwaukee for a previously scheduled visit of a Harley-Davidson factory after the company decided it wasn't comfortable hosting him amid planned protests, an administration official said Tuesday.

Trump had been scheduled to tour the factory Thursday where he also planned to sign executive orders related to American manufacturing.

The visit had not been publicly announced, but White House staffers were already on the ground in Milwaukee setting up for Trump's planned visit to the factory on Thursday.

White House spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham confirmed Trump is not expected to go to Milwaukee on Thursday.
Harley-Davidson issued a statement Tuesday night saying they "don't have, nor did we have, a scheduled visit from the President this week at any of our facilities."

"We are proud to have hosted Presidential visits at our facilities. Three of the last five presidents -- Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton -- have visited us at our facilities. These visits are a testament to the pride and passion of our employees and their great work building Harley-Davidson motorcycles," said Maripat Blankenheim, director of Harley-Davidson's corporate communication. "We look forward to hosting the president in the future."

Large protests have been in the works in recent days, particularly in light of Trump's executive order issuing an immigration ban.

It was the threat of protests, and not Trump's planned signing of executive orders, that made Harley-Davidson uncomfortable, the official said.

The canceled trip highlighted the difficulties Trump will continue to face as he looks to implement his agenda while his presidency is engulfed in controversy.

Trump's decision to temporarily ban citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries from traveling to the US and suspend the admission of all refugees has sparked a wave of protests nationwide -- protests which now appear to have torpedoed the rollout of an unrelated part of his policy agenda.

The travel ban was also met with widespread condemnation by Democrats and even some Republicans who called the move counterproductive to US counterterrorism efforts.

That fiery opposition has already ramped up Democrats' efforts to stall the confirmation of Trump's Cabinet nominees, and could also trickle down to legislative efforts.

After all the Bikers for Trump have done for US, to have these stupid protests result in canceling the American Manufacturing announcements at the Harley plant in Milwaukee would have been a very nice event!

See, you know the protests aren't American, they're foreign. No American would want to stop a President of the United States from meeting with the Harley workers in Milwaukee and announcing his American Manufacturing Executive Orders. Americans want our jobs back, we want our manufacturing base rebuilt, we want the good jobs making things again in the USA. Why would anyone in America plan a protest against that? Only a foreign globalist socialist would do that.

President Trump's scheduled trip to a Harley-Davidson factory in Milwaukee on Thursday has been canceled over the likelihood of protests, CNN reported Tuesday.

An administration official told the news network that the plans were scrapped after the motorcycle giant became uncomfortable with the threat of demonstrations.

Over the weekend, massive protests broke out at airports across the country after Trump signed an executive order on Friday banning citizens of certain Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S. Other large protests were planned for the president's Milwaukee visit, according to CNN.

Trump was originally supposed to head to the factory for a tour on Thursday, where he was set to sign executive orders pertaining to manufacturing.

A visit to the Harley-Davidson factory in Milwaukee by President Trump has been canceled over the company's worry that there might be protests related to his immigration and refugee ban, an administration official told CNN on Tuesday.

Trump had planned to sign executive orders related to American manufacturing while he was there, the official said. The Thursday visit was not announced publicly, but there were White House staffers in Milwaukee getting things prepared for the event. President Donald Trump met with Harley-Davidson executives on the South Lawn of the White House on Thursday, recognizing the American company for creating jobs in the United States.

Trump was joined by Vice President Mike Pence and Trump’s chief of staff Reince Priebus, a Wisconsin native.

Trump spoke for about 15 minutes with the executives who arrived on Harley Davidson motorcycles. Most of the conversation was not audible to reporters, but it appeared that the executives pointed out the different kinds of motorcycles to the president.

When reporters asked if Trump would ride a motorcycle, he quipped, “Boy, would you like to see me fall off one of these!”

“Harley-Davidson has been an American success story since 1901,” Spicer said to reporters at the White House press briefing. Spicer said he would meet with Harley executives and union workers to hear about ways to expand their business.

Donald Trump met with executives from Harley-Davidson Thursday, and he and Vice President Mike Pence greeted the team on the South Lawn of the White House.

According to the White House press pool, Trump could be heard repeating the phrase, “Made in America,” while flashing his patented, double-thumbs up.

Worked out nicely. The President was unable to go to Harley Davidson but Harley Davidson came to the White House, representing their company well.

It was nice Judy, to see and to hear them all chatting about the "Made in America" Harley Davidson motorcycles.

The President has been finding ways to make lemonade out of lemons. He has been tossed a lot of lemons.

They are without question the best motorcycles in the world!! As were all of our products once when they were made here. People need to remember that! And work towards those days again.
