There may be ways to clean up coal. Yet I can't help but wonder if the lobbyists will resist that, too. I'm definitely in favor of alternative energy sources, and locally I have been speaking up for public transit electrification, since there are some really good new technologies, that are now becoming profitable enterprises. TM4 Corp. in Montreal has developed a way to replace truck and bus diesel drivetrains with electric. I know it took some subsidization from their Hydro Authority. Diesels were effectively subsidized by the US Army at one time, too.
I know that wind energy is acquired with high subsidization at this point. But there is a lot of research and development going on all around the world. In our area there is plenty of natural energy going to waste---the question is how to reliably harness it. Plus energy efficiency on the consumption end means that we don't need the large scale production facilities, at least once grid sharing technology is worked out. Here is a website with practically no one but engineers commenting, and there are thousands of articles covering nearly everything:http://www.greencarcongress.com"Men of low degree are vanity, Men of high degree are a lie. As far as home energy is concerned, it seems to me there is no reason every house, building, etc., in the SW doesn't have solar panels.
It is just too expensive a lay out for most people. Of course, it is strange that we, people, will lay out $30/50K for a new car/pickup, but not solar power for our homes.
So, we do have to put a lot of the blame on ourselves.
All over Texas, there are abandoned gas and oil wells, whose casings are deteriorating and leaking toxic mess into water tables, wells, etc. I don't know if that can be cleaned up.
