Rep. Heller from Nevada, a GOOD GUY :)

I wrote Congressman Heller (among others) in regards to the new amnesty bill and asked him what he thought about illegal alien invasion in general.
Here is my snail mail letter from him (he is a GOOD GUY!)

    Dear .....
Thank you for contacting me with your support for an "enforcement first" strategy to secure the border. I appreciate your thoughts and input on this critically important issue, and I want you to know I agree with you.

In the debate on illegal immigration, I am strongly opposed to any bill that does not secure our borders as a first step toward halting the invasion of illegal aliens. Although we are historically largely a nation of immigrants, I believe we are fundamentally a nation of laws. I firmly oppose any form of amnesty for illegal aliens. Congress must respect the rule of law when we consider a solution to the problem of illegal aliens. Therefore, border security and enforcement must be primary concerns to protect the citizens of Nevada, and to preserve our nation's sovereignty.

While our established immigration procedure needs reform, I am firmly committed to securing our borders first. Illegal aliens have compromised the security of our nation by avoiding the process that protects Americans from criminal or terrorist behavior. For this reason I oppose "guest worker" provisions, amnesty, or any other way for illegal aliens to gain citizenship after disregarding our laws.

This debate shouldn't be about traditional immigration policy, but instead should be about the enforcement of our border, where an estimated 250,000 more illegal aliens will cross over this year. In Nevada, we are close enough to the Mexican border to witness this influx through Arizona and California. The Department of Homeland Security estimates that Nevada was home to 240,000 illegal aliens in 2005, which was 41% increase from 170,000 in 2000. We have one of the fastest growing illegal populations in the country, and we must find a way to check the growth of this population.

In the 110th Congress, I am going to support legislation that will bring troops to the border, give our local police departments the authority to help deal with illegal aliens, and provide more resources like detention space for our efforts I also would like to see an end to the ridiculous "catch and release" policy which allows illegal aliens back into our nation.

Among other measures to ensure the safety of our border, I am strongly in favor of a fence along our southern border. This vital measure should be supplemented by increased surveillance technology. In eastern San Diego County, the construction of a fence to separate California from Tijuana, Mexico has been exceptionally successful at reducing the amount of illegal crossings and crime along the fenced region. According to the FBI Crime Index, crime in San Diego County was reduced by 56.3% between 1989 and 2000. Before the construction of the fence, six to ten vehicle drive-throughs were reported per day. This number was reduced to only four drive-throughs in 2004, which occurred where the fence was incomplete. The construction of border infrastructure has had overwhelming results in reducing drug trafficking, illegal crossings and crime.

I would also like to see employers penalized for knowingly exploiting illegal aliens, and I support measures to make it more difficult for undocumented workers to attain or use fake identification. Our employers need the tools to discourage illegal aliens from crossing the border for low-skilled jobs by screening carefully for legal documentation.

Stepped-up enforcement is not only extremely important to our national security, but is important to public safety as well. Criminals accounted for 43% of total illegal alien removals in 2005, and those removed from the country for involvement in dangerous drugs and assault account for 48 percent of the criminal aliens removed. Enforcement within the interior of the country and along our borders is essential to reducing the amount of dangerous aliens in our communities.

A "border security and enforcement-first" strategy is essential to the safety and security of Nevadans, and I support legislation that will begin to solve our immigration problem by these means. I will continue to fight for immigration policy that has no provisions for amnesty of any kind.

Thank you once again for contacting me, and I will keep your concerns in mind. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions or concerns.
    Sincerely,
    Dean Heller, member of Congress

Since I do not have an email on him, I have written him by snail mail in reply (this was snail mail to me)

    Dear Congressman Heller,
thank you for your reply to my concerns regarding the invasion of the illegal aliens and the planned amnesty bill coming before congress soon.
I agree with everything you have said to me in your letter regarding a LEGAL response to what should be done about this illegal alien invasion to our country.
I just wanted to let you know that no matter what you decide to run for in your political career, you have my vote!
    thank you,
    .......
