ICE Set to Deport University of Arkansas Honors Student

    From: Immigrant RIghts

Jonathan Chavez, an honors student at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, was on his way home to visit his parents when immigration authorities nabbed him on a bus and hauled him to a private detention facility in Florida. His crime? Despite the fact that his parents have legal status in the United States, Jonathan does not possess legal status because his naturalization process was stalled when he turned 18.

Jonathan came from Peru as a minor under his parents’ work visas. He grew up like any other American kid in Rogers, Arkansas. Jonathan sang solos in the church choir and graduated from high school with a 4.0 grade-point-average. Not only was he accepted to the University of Arkansas, he is a member of their celebrated Honors College and is only two semesters away from graduating. Besides being a sharp student and beautiful singer, Jonathan is a young man who wants to give back to his community. Everyone who knows Jonathan speaks about him in glowing terms. His community is waiting for him to come home and his friends started a petition at Change.org on his behalf requesting immigration authorities for deferred action.

As President Barack Obama continues to turn his back on immigrant communities, thousands of students stand on trial for their lives, awaiting deportations to countries that they do not know. Jonathan has his deportation hearing this Thursday.

Tell Immigration and Customs Enforcement to let Jonathan return to school and to stop deportation proceedings against him.

It is futile to detain and deport Jonathan Chavez on the basis that he is breaking the law. He never chose to come to the United States and no one could have predicted that he would not be able to adjust his status along with his parents due to an arbitrary age limit and the sloth-like pace at which the immigration bureaucracy works.

What happened to Jonathan can happen to any (Latino) American teenager who does not carry a birth certificate and U.S. passport at all times. Following the logic of our immigration officials, failure to produce evidence of legal status at random places in the United States means one is here illegally and deserves to be detained and deported. One has to wonder exactly who is served by this acrimonious and callous policy.

Right now, Jonathan should be in college attending classes. There is no earthly reason for putting him in deportation, much less a detention facility hundreds of miles from his home state of Arkansas. Tell ICE to release him from the detention center in Florida immediately and re-open his case for naturalization

    No, sorry, you're wrong.

"He grew up like any other American kid in Rogers, Arkansas."

    No, sorry, you're wrong!

"Jonathan does not possess legal status"

What don't you understand about this?

"Jonathan is a young man who wants to give back to his community. "

Excellent idea for you and your illegal alien commrades-go back to your own countries-the US is not your community

"It is futile to detain and deport Jonathan Chavez on the basis that he is breaking the law. "

Your parents screwed your life over, American citizens did not, therefore we (US citizens) are not responsible, your parents are-go whine to them

HOGWASH!!! These invaders always spout "But we want to give back to our community"

They sure the hell don't want to give back in their home countries, the countries they hold alliegence to, why would we ever believe they would want to give back here.

All they do is take, take, take!

Send him and his family packing...we don't want you here!!

Alright, so he came legally on his parents work visa... well first off wtf do we let people bring children on work visa's. Should allow bringing family even minors until they have permanent residency.

Anyways he came on his parents work visa legally. He turned 18 which put a hold on his status. It did NOT cancel his status. At that time he had 6 months to put in an application of adjustment of status to get a temporary green card as a family member. If the paperwork was filed he wouldn't be in the issue he is in today. 6 months to get all that done.

Then he's an "honor's student" at a University, well how old is he? Sounds like he's gone w/o doing his paperwork for a couple years. So whats his excuse for not doing his paperwork? He didn't know US law? He thought someone else would do it for him? He wanted to be a poster child for illegal buddies? All bad excuses that deserve deportation.

If an American CITIZEN has to wait 1 year for a minor child or a spouse to get a visa to the US why should they have some instant route. If a US Citizen gets a visa and brings someone over, then fails to keep up the paperwork. That person gets deported. Why should they have it better?

Don't follow the law, GTFO. We don't need him.

I bet peru (his rightful country of citizenship) could use a fine young man like the one described above! He's also bilingual, which should prove to be an additional asset!

Give him some sheet music and send him back to his homeland and let him sing there. If we want to hear him sing he can send us a CD.
