More Mexicans Are Seeking Dual Citizenship for Their Childre

More Mexicans Are Seeking Dual Citizenship for Their Children
    Published February 15, 2011

More and more Mexican parents with children born in the United States are requesting dual citizenship for them, according to officials at Mexico's consulate in Raleigh, capital of North Carolina.

The consulate in Raleigh serves more than half a million Mexicans who live in the Carolinas.

Under Mexican law, people born in another country can obtain Mexican citizenship if one of their parents is Mexican and without having to renounce their citizenship in their birth nation.

According to figures compiled by the consulate, in 2005 just 415 people requested dual citizenship, but by 2008 that figure had risen to 4,745 and in 2010 it was 4,918.

Lorenzo Preciado, the official in charge of the consulate's documentation department, said that the situation can be explained by different factors, including the increase in the Mexican population in the area, greater access to consular services and the strict immigration laws in the United States.
"Parents also want their children to obtain (Mexican) nationality to keep the Mexican identity in the family. This is a very strict procedure, because the Mexican government strongly protects the integrity of minors," Preciado said.

The consulate in Raleigh each day processes between 50 and 70 citizenship registrations of children with Mexican parents.

Due to the great demand, the consulate is also offering the service on specially designated weekends that it organizes each month in North and South Carolina counties.

On Feb. 12 in Charlotte, the largest city in North Carolina, dozens of families showed up at the mobile consulate to register their children as Mexicans.
"We're Mexican and we also want our children to be. It's something we had to do but we didn't have the opportunity and today at last we could," Belen Rojas, originally from Hidalgo, told Efe after registering her 2-year-old son, Ariel.

Rojas, who has lived in Charlotte for 13 years, was accompanied by her sister Esperanza, who submitted the citizenship papers for her two children, ages 8 and 9, so that they would "be prepared in case something happens."

"Now more than ever you have to be prepared, with your papers in order, in case we must return to our country and thus our children will already have citizenship," said Alfredo Rojas, Esperanza's husband.

Consul-General Carlos Flores Vizcarra said that the "dilemma" is one that is forcing Mexican families in the Carolinas to register their children.

"It's more recommended that they do the procedures here since in Mexico the situation is more complicated without having all the documents," Flores Vizcarra told Efe.

Without Mexican nationality, the children will have to be registered as foreigners in schools in Mexico without access to scholarships for college study and without the appropriate documentation they will not be able to access free public health care.

"Often the U.S. birth certificates have mistakes that can only be corrected while in the United States and if the family is already in Mexico, the procedure takes a long time and is complicated," Preciado added.

This is the unbelievable mentality of Mexicans. They are greedy and care no one whit about America being for Americans. They just want to USE this country while claiming citizenship in another country so they can get even more. They run to the U.S. just to take whatever they can possibly take by hook or crook, and then it is never enough - they want more... ummm for themselves. It is this mentality that has brought Mexico to where it is today. They are ethically and morally bankrupt.

I find this humorous that Mexican officials are so very concerned that Mexican citizens have the proper documents when returning to Mexico, but criticize the U.S. for requiring documents. Do as I say, not as I do. The poor babies wouldn't qualify for scholarships in Mexico, yet they march in the streets demanding in-state tuition and government subsidies here in the U.S.

The USA must change our laws and stop dual citizenship. NO WAY should people who go to live/have citizenship in other countries be allowed to vote or hold political office in the USA.

After all how can your total allegiance be for the USA if you live or show allegiance to another country ? That is like having a wife & a mistress you eventually have to chose who you will be loyal too.
