Trump beats Clinton in Iowa Youth Straw Poll

Trump beats Clinton in Iowa Youth Straw Poll

Posted: Thursday, November 3, 2016 12:00 am By Krystal Sidzyik

If the results of the Iowa Youth Straw Poll are any indication of what’s to come Nov. 8, then Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton could be in trouble in Iowa.

The Iowa Youth Straw Poll, organized by the Secretary of State Paul Pate, announced its results during a Facebook Live on the Secretary’s Facebook page on Tuesday afternoon.

“I think it was a great opportunity for them to see first-hand how the process works. It also gives them a running start for the next election cycle and also receive a little tutoring at the same time, so they’ll have a good base of knowledge for Iowa’s elections process,” Pate said. “I hope this fired them up and will also spur them to encourage their parents, neighbors and friends to get out and vote.”

More than 57,000 students from more than 250 schools participated in the poll with most students voting Nov. 1 during school.

Area schools that participated include Lewis Central Middle School, St. Albert Catholic School, Abraham Lincoln High School and Thomas Jefferson High School, among others.

“All of our students will be eligible voters in a few years, while some of our seniors are eligible to vote now,” T.J. social studies teacher Ryan Loots said. “Participating in a program like the Iowa Straw Poll helps students discuss important issues, public policy, and what the various parties and candidates stand for. Hopefully, this helps students make wise decisions at the polling place this year and in future years.”

Poll results showed Donald Trump as the presidential winner receiving 46 percent of the vote, with Hillary Clinton receiving 36 percent of the vote.

Students also voted for candidates running for the U.S. Senate and U.S. House Districts in Iowa. Results showed Republican Sen. Charles Grassley as the winning candidate with 62 percent of the vote, and Democrat Patty Judge with 25 percent of the vote.

Results for the 3rd U.S. House District, which serves southwest Iowa, include incumbent Rep. David Young with 56 percent of the vote and Jim Mowrer with 31 percent of the vote.

Pate hopes the poll will spur students to encourage parents, neighbors and friends to get out and vote, he said.

Donald Trump is ahead of Hillary Clinton in the key swing state of Virginia in a poll released Wednesday, and it shows the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s announcement of the re-opened case into Hillary’s use of a private email server has likely swung the race Trump’s way.

The Hampton University poll has Trump at 44 percent, Clinton at 41 percent, and 15 percent of voters said they “don’t know” who they support or refused to say who they do. The poll was of 802 registered likely voters and was conducted between October 26 and October 30. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.57 percent.

Hampton said that Clinton had a two point lead in the poll before the FBI investigation story broke on Friday, October 28. The poll found that 47.13 percent of Virginia voters believe the most important issue is “working to improve the Economy and create jobs.” The second most important issue for voters is healthcare, 19.08 percent, and third is terrorism, 12.22 percent.

Forty-eight percent to 44 percent, voters polled believed that Trump would be better equipped than Hillary to solve economic issues. Trump was also the candidate that voters found most qualified to handle terrorism, 49.38 percent to 47.38 percent.
