Utah House approves Arizona-style immigration law

Utah House approves Arizona-style immigration law

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah House has approved an Arizona-style immigration enforcement law after heated debate.

Republican Rep. Stephen Sandstrom of Orem says House Bill 70 will discourage illegal immigrants from coming to Utah and reduce crime.

The bill passed on a 58-15 vote after more than an hour of debate Friday. It now goes to the Senate.

Sandstrom revised the bill after concerns about an estimated cost to local governments of $5 million to $11 million annually.

Now, law enforcement has discretion when checking the immigration status of people stopped for class B and C misdemeanors. Felonies and class A misdemeanors would still require a check.

Democratic House Minority Leader David Litvack of Salt Lake City says the law would not drive down crime and would pave the way for racial profiling.

This is a very important piece of legislation. In fact, it may become our flagship legislation in states for 2011.,

Sorry to see it get watered down, but we can always adjust it later.

those pro-illegals always spew out nonsense such as " the law would not drive down crime and would pave the way for racial profiling.". And of course this is utter bull bc by definition being here illegally is a crime and all the crimes that follow like identity fraud/theft etc. As for racial profiling, how cute! Well sorry if 80% of illegals come from south of the border!

Now these pro-illegals are feeling the heat bc Americans are not taking this bull anymore, this nonsense and we are calling them on it and drawing a line in the sand.

This is NOT the time to back down but to redouble our determination to expose our government for not doing its job, our politicians who pander and yes those advocacy groups who all seem to represent only one ethnic group. Enough with the not so veiled threats and the intimidation attempts!

Pro illegals keep sidestepping the bottom line and that is ALL illegals who are here are in fact criminals and they need to be hunted down as the criminals they are. Turn them in to be deported by each and every AMERICA LOVING citizen of this nation. If no documentation can be presented then they and their entir family need to be deported. This includes anchor brats as well. Its time they get pulled from the taxpayes teat and sent back over the border.

"Sandstrom revised the bill after concerns about an estimated cost to local governments of $5 million to $11 million annually. "

Compared to what illegals are costing them

    Wow!
No amnesty until the border is secured... then no amnesty.
