UPDATE: GOP Congressman’s Claim Sparks Outrage: Obama Admin. Rejected Veterans’ Exemption Request That Would Allow Them to Visit WWII Memorial

Several Republican members of Congress removed barricades from the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. on Monday and escorted veterans onto the grounds that were legally closed because of the government shutdown.

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) told reporters at the scene she was going for a morning walk when she heard that World War II veterans were being stopped from entering their own memorial.
“I ran over as quick as I could … and I couldn’t believe my eyes,” Bachmann said. “There were all these veterans standing here behind police tape and they are prevented from going in to see the memorial.”

“About maybe eight to 12 of us members, one member had a scissor cut the tape and then we just escorted the veterans in,” she continued. “You should have seen these veterans. They had smiles from ear to ear. They were thrilled.”

National Parks Service spokeswoman Carol Johnson said she was unsure how the government would deal with situation going forward.
“We are seeking guidance,” Johnson told reporters at the scene.

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), who was one of the members to escort the veterans into the grounds, suggested he and other members of Congress would be at the memorial every day to let veterans in.
“I will be active as I need to be in supporting the access to our memorials with our veterans,” he told reporters on a conference call.
One witness told TheBlaze the veterans were excited to gain entry onto the grounds.
“They were really touched,” California resident Jennifer Mason said. “I think they felt really honored.”

Fred Martin, a Navy veteran who fought in the Korean War, told TheBlaze he felt like he has been “robbed” of his trip to D.C. which he had planned for nearly a year.
Martin expressed gratitude towards the members of Congress who allowed veterans to enter the memorial.
“Whatever party they are in, whoever they are — thank you,” said Martin. “We were told we were only going to be able to see it from the outside and it’s really nice to be in here and think about all those that gave their lives and sacrificed.”
“This is all open,” he added. “You have to have security around anyway, so why not just let people walk around?”

Obama admin. knew about WWII veterans’ request and rejected it

The White House and the Department of the Interior rejected a request from Rep. Steven Palazzo’s office to have World War II veterans visit the World War II memorial in Washington, the Mississippi Republican told The Daily Caller Tuesday.

Palazzo helped the veterans commit an act of civil disobedience against the Park Service Tuesday, when the heroes stormed through barricades around the closed memorial.

The veterans were visiting the memorial as part of Honor Flight, a non-profit that provides veterans free transport to the nation’s capital to visit the memorials to the wars they fought in.

“We got the heads up that they will be barricaded and specifically asked for an exception for these heroes,” Palazzo told TheDC. “We were denied and told, ‘It’s a government shutdown, what do you expect?’ when we contacted the liaison for the White House.”

Palazzo’s office was in touch with the heads of the National Park Service, the Department of the Interior and the Capitol Police. He says all these officials rejected his request to allow the veterans, many of whom are octogenarians and some of whom are in poor health, to attend.

Palazzo, a Gulf War Marine veteran who has participated in all five of the Honor Flights, blames the White House for making it harder on veterans and playing politics. “At first I thought it was a huge bureaucratic oversight,” Palazzo told The Daily Caller, “but having talked with the officials I can’t help but think this was politically motivated. Honor Flights, which bring WWII veterans to the nation’s memorials, are planned a year in advance and cost anywhere between $80,000 to $100,000. How low can you get with playing politics over our nation’s veterans?”

In a statement, Palazzo noted that he is introducing legislation to ensure that all Honor Flights are granted access this week. “This is an open-air memorial that the public has 24/7 access to under normal circumstances — even when Park Service personnel aren’t present,” Palazzo said in the statement. “It actually requires more effort and expense to shut out these veterans from their Memorial than it would to simply let them through. My office has been in touch with NPS officials and the Administration to try to resolve this issue.”

Honor Flight to World War II Memorial in jeopardy due to shutdown

Through October, the are over 35,000 veterans scheduled to visit the site, more than 900 in the next five days alone.
TOLEDO -- In and around the Glass City, affects of the government shutdown can be seen at our museums, monuments, and national parks. The gates are closed and locked, denying access completely to the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge.

Transportation Safety Administration employees were still working at Toledo Express Airport on Monday, but when WNWO called the TSA to find out if they would be affected, there was a message that said the public relations representative did not have access to her voicemail or email due to the government shutdown.

A letter from Rep. Marcy Kaptur's (D-OH 9) office reads,"...only services deemed essential for the safety of human life and protection of property will be continued."

Yet, for a group of World War II veterans visiting the national memorial in Washington D.C., an all expense paid trip which is called an "Honor Flight," the shutdown was not stopping them from seeing the tribute that was inspired by them.

"It just goes to show you why we won World War II," says Honor Flight of Northwest Ohio President Lee Armstrong.

Many elderly veterans, some in wheelchairs, broke through the barriers set up around the memorial, as police, park service employees, and tourists looked on. "The Germans and the Japanese couldn't contain us. They weren't going to let barriers contain them today. They wanted to see their memorial," says Armstrong.

Honor Flight of Northwest Ohio has a trip scheduled to depart from Toledo next Wednesday, October 9.

"We will make the call this Friday to determine if the flight is still a go, or if we will have to re-schedule," Armstrong explains.

He says they are considering going ahead with the trip even if the government is still on shutdown, but when he called the parks service, he was told they would face arrest. "I said, are you kidding me? You're going to arrest a 90/91-year-old veteran from seeing his memorial? If it wasn't for them it wouldn't be there. She said, 'That's correct sir.'"

When Armstrong asked for her name, he says she did not give it to him and then promptly hung up the phone.

99% of veterans on Honor Flights have never had the opportunity to see the memorial that is devoted to their service.

Through October, the are over 35,000 veterans scheduled to visit the site, more than 900 in the next five days alone.

It may all be waiting in limbo if the government can't complete their job.
