Voter fraud probe roils Ga. Senate race

    By Alexandra Jaffe

A group helmed by a major donor and policy adviser to Democratic Senate candidate Michele Nunn is under investigation by the Georgia secretary of State for alleged voter fraud.

Secretary of State Brian Kemp (R) said in a memo, reported by WSB-TV, that his office has “received numerous complaints about voter applications submitted by the New Georgia Project,” an organization launched to register and turn out voters to the polls.

“Preliminary investigation has revealed significant illegal activities, including forged voter registration applications, forged signatures on releases, and applications with false or inaccurate information,” Kemp wrote in the memo.

Nunn is running against Republican David Perdue for a Senate seat left open by the retirement of Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.). Democrats see the race as a pick-up opportunity in a year where they are largely playing defense.

Most polls have shown a close race, with Perdue leading Nunn by three points in the most recent survey, conducted earlier this month.

Republicans are seizing on the allegations against the New Georgia Project to tarnish Nunn, suggesting the group was part of a larger effort by Democrats to “expand the electorate by any means necessary.”

“The serious allegations of illegal activities and potential fraud from liberal voter registration groups are outrageous and should be investigated to the fullest extent of the law,” said Perdue spokeswoman Megan Whittemore.

The New Georgia Project and its parent organization, Third Sector Development, were issued subpoenas this week demanding documents relating to the allegations be turned over to the Georgia Election Board by Sept. 19.

Third Sector Development is run by Georgia House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams (D), who has contributed to Nunn’s campaign and was listed on an official campaign strategy document as a proposed member of a group of potential policy advisers.

Abrams said in a statement she was “saddened” by the subpoenas, and that the group is working to comply with them.

“The abrupt release of this subpoena saddens me as I know the efforts of this organization have been done with the mission of increasing voter registration and engagement in the most disadvantaged and underserved groups in the state,” she said.
“The New Georgia Project team has worked directly with the Secretary of State’s Office every step of the way, seeking to address any concerns raised by their office or by the counties, to share information and be transparent on our work.”

A spokesman for the group, Rev. Dr. Raphael Warnock, said he was hopeful “that this investigation by the Secretary of State is not intended to thwart efforts to enfranchise voters."

Perdue's campaign accused the group of tampering with the election process.

“The fact that an organization led by a well-known Nunn supporter would attempt to illegally register voters is unacceptable and reminiscent of the Obama-political machine’s ACORN scandal. There is nothing more fundamental to our democratic process than maintaining the integrity of our elections and any attempt to tamper with them is deplorable.”

State launches fraud investigation into voter registration group

Stacey Abrams is the House Minority Leader for the Georgia General Assembly.

    ATLANTA —
Channel 2 Action News has learned Georgia's secretary of state is investigating allegations of forged voter registration applications and demanding records from a voter registration group with ties to one of the state's highest ranking Democrats.

A subpoena was sent to the New Georgia Project and its parent organization Third Sector Development on Tuesday.

The organization is a project of the nonprofit organization Third Sector Development, which was founded and is led by House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams.

The subpoena demands all documents be turned over to the State Election Board's investigators by Sept. 16.

In a memo sent to county elections officials, Secretary of State Brian Kemp said in recent weeks his office has “received numerous complaints about voter applications submitted by the New Georgia Project.”

Kemp wrote, “Preliminary investigation has revealed significant illegal activities’ including forged voter registration applications, forged signatures on releases, and applications with false or inaccurate information.”

A spokesman confirmed Kemp's office was contacted by officials in DeKalb, Gwinnett, Henry, Bartow, Butts and Muscogee counties.

“We’re just not going to put up with fraud. I mean, we have zero tolerance for that in Georgia so we’ve opened an investigation and served some subpoenas,” Kemp told Channel 2 political reporter Lori Geary. “At the end of the day this is not going to be about politics. This is about potential fraud which we think happened.” Geary went to the location where the subpoena was served and found a UPS store inside the lobby of a Sheraton Hotel in downtown Atlanta.

The New Georgia Project's website describes it as “a non-partisan effort to register and civically engage the rising electorate in our state.”

Abrams released a statement on Tuesday afternoon.

“The abrupt release of this subpoena saddens me as I know the efforts of this organization have been done with the mission of increasing voter registration and engagement in the most disadvantaged and underserved groups in the state. The New Georgia Project team has worked directly with the Secretary of State’s Office every step of the way, seeking to address any concerns raised by their office or by the counties, to share information and be transparent on our work.”

New Georgia Project spokesman and senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. Raphael Warnock, also sent a statement to Channel 2 Action News that said, "I am fearful that within our state there are grave voter inequalities in minority communities, and I hope that this investigation by the Secretary of State is not intended to thwart efforts to enfranchise voters."

Voter registration fraud probe looms over tight Georgia Senate race

    By John Roberts
    Published September 19, 2014FoxNews.com

    VIDEO REPORT AT LINK:

ATLANTA – As the pastor of Atlanta's famed Ebenezer Baptist Church, Rev. Raphael Warnock knows how to deliver a line for maximum effect. He employed that skill Wednesday, decrying a fraud probe the state has launched into a minority voter registration drive.

"You don't have to wear a hood -- you don't have to be a member of the Ku Klux Klan to be engaged in voter suppression. We know voter suppression when we see it," Warnock told a press conference in Georgia's Capitol building.

The charge, harkening back to a dark period in the South's history, was aimed squarely at Georgia's Republican Secretary of State Brian Kemp. Kemp's office is investigating whether the group Warnock is associated with -- the New Georgia Project -- has committed fraud in its drive to register more than 100,000 minority voters before the Oct. 6 deadline.

"There's somebody clearly doing something wrong," Kemp told Fox News. "And we want to figure out who that is, and try to make sure that we stop that. And bring charges against those people."

At an emergency hearing of the state Election Board this week, Kemp's investigator Chris Harvey laid out the elements of the case. Harvey said he had confirmed 28 cases of fraud in 14 counties -- 25 fraudulent voter registration applications and three fraudulent canvassing sheets. Some had forged signatures; others, false information. Another 26 cases were labeled suspicious.

Falsifying a voter registration form is a felony in the state of Georgia.

"Any time that you're talking about forgery and fraud in Georgia law, it's certainly very serious," Kemp told Fox News.

The issue is a particular hot button this year because of the narrow margins in the race to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga. Polls show Democratic candidate Michelle Nunn narrowly trailing Republican David Perdue. Nunn's campaign believes if it makes significant inroads into signing up some of the 800,000 unregistered minority voters in Georgia, she could take the seat.

The New Georgia Project was founded by Georgia House Minority Leader Rep. Stacey Abrams. She is a member of Nunn's so-called "kitchen cabinet," advising the candidate. Abrams told Fox News she maintains a clear wall of separation between her work with the Nunn campaign and what she insists is a "nonpartisan" effort to get more minorities out to the polls in November.

Kemp has slapped the New Georgia Project with a subpoena, demanding any and all documents and communications related to the voter registration drive by next Friday. The NGP fired back on Wednesday proclaiming its innocence and says it is strictly following the law. Abrams complains that the subpoena is "overly burdensome and an abuse of power," and is taking valuable time away from the group's voter registration drive.

"We do not object to sharing information, but what we do object to is a witch hunt -- and a fishing expedition," Abrams told the press conference.

The NGP lashed out at Kemp, accusing him of a pattern of voter suppression and intimidation. They charge that of 85,000 new voters they have signed up, 51,000 have not yet been registered. Kemp insists that any valid voter registration forms will be processed by the appropriate county officials and that his office is not blocking the registration of minority voters.

"I was very disappointed in a lot of the reverend's comments," Kemp told Fox News. "I think anybody that knows me knows that I'm not a racist and some of the things that they've said and accused me of are just flat wrong."

New Georgia Project officials claim the words fraud, forgery and felony have a chilling effect on any other organizations who might want to sign up new voters.

"Mr. Secretary of State, stop this dog and pony show with all of the subpoenas -- with all of the false accusations and the smear campaign, and do your job," Warnock demanded at the press conference.

Kemp insists his job is exactly what he is doing -- and that reports of fraud and forgery were brought to his attention by several counties and that it is simply his duty to investigate them. He told Fox News that with what is at stake in November, it's not a surprise the matter has become so politicized.

"It's unfortunate that it's gotten political, but we're in the silly season, if you will right now, and have some big races in Georgia."
