As Seven on Your Side reported last night, Howard Industries in Laurel was fined—and paid— two and a half million dollars after pleading guilty to a single count of conspiracy in connection with the nation's largest workplace raid on illegal immigrants in which 600 illegal workers were arrested in 2008.

Howard Industries is one of the leading manufacturers in this area and has done many good things for the community over the years. We have no intention of praising them for this activity however. But…we do have a question. Why do we not see more instances of these sorts of raids and resulting fines on other industries throughout the nation? No doubt, this same activity is alive and flourishing even more in the areas more convenient to the Mexican Border. Illegal immigrants come to this country looking for jobs. Americans hire them because they will work cheap, won't complain, and a number of other reasons.

That is the main reason why we have the crisis on our southern border with illegals coming over in droves. If federal officials would get as zealous about pursuing and punishing all those who benefit from hiring illegal aliens instead of American workers everywhere else as they did in Laurel, it just might go a long way toward solving the problem.

I'm Jim Cameron with today's Viewpoint. Let us hear from you.
