We Never Occupied Mexico: Beck Schools Eva Longoria On Mexican History
We Never Occupied Mexico: Beck Schools Eva Longoria On Mexican History
May 15, 2012
You might have caught actress Eva Longoria‘s recent appearance on Bill Maher’s “Real Time” in which she claimed that Hispanics would not be moved to vote for Mitt Romney simply because he might tap Marco Rubio to be his vice president. The mere thought of it would be, as she put it, “insulting.” After all, she claims that Mexico was “occupied” by the United States.
“And the idiots in the Bill Maher audience ate it up,” Beck said on his Tuesday evening broadcast before launching into one of the most concise rundowns of Mexican history to date. In fact, as a Mexican-American, it seems inconceivable Longoria didn’t know her own history as well as Beck does.
As it turns out, the Spaniards occupied Mexico for some 300 years and even the word Hispanic was one employed by the Romans when they occupied what now is Spain. So, the Spanish language that is spoken across Latin America is a result of Spanish occupation. Likewise, it was Spain that occupied Mexico for hundreds of years.
in 1846 the Mexican-American war began in the wake of the 1845 U.S. annexation of Texas. Mexico considered Texas part of its territory despite the Texas Revolution nearly a decade prior. Mexico never acknowledged Texas’ independence.
Ultimately, the Americans won the war with Mexico but on February 2 ,1848, the two countries signed the Treaty of Guadalupe which stated that U.S. troops would withdraw from Mexico, including Mexico City and take ownership of the Southwestern United States. What’s more, Beck pointed out that the U.S. agreed to buy the land from Mexico for $15 million, even though it was won squarely in victory and there was no obligation to do so. Not at any time did the United States occupy nor rule Mexico. The United States did not subject Mexicans to our form of government nor did it leave troops stationed in the country.
Beck continues with the real history of Latinos in America, below.

- About the Program
What made America? What makes us? These two questions are at the heart of the new PBS series Faces of America with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. The Harvard scholar turns to the latest tools of genealogy and genetics to explore the family histories of 12 renowned Americans — professor and poet Elizabeth Alexander, chef Mario Batali, comedian Stephen Colbert, novelist Louise Erdrich, journalist Malcolm Gladwell, actress Eva Longoria, musician Yo-Yo Ma, director Mike Nichols, Her Majesty Queen Noor, television host/heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz, actress Meryl Streep, and figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi.
Eva Longoria
(Actress)

Eva Longoria became a household name when she was cast as Gabrielle Solis on the hit television show Desperate Housewives. A Screen Actors Guild Award winner and Golden Globe nominee, Eva is a champion of charities and organizations supporting Latinos. She has been honored several times with American Latino Media Arts awards and was selected in 2006 as ALMA’s “person of the year.” In interviews, Longoria is open about her Mexican-American heritage and her childhood in South Texas – a sharp contrast to the life of a Hollywood actress.
The Longoria family’s roots in Texas run back to a time before Texas even existed. Lorenzo Longoria, Eva’s first ancestor to arrive in the New World, sailed from Spain in 1603. Through the generations, Lorenzo’s descendants moved north to the modern US-Mexico border.
In 1767, Pedro Longoria, Eva’s 7th great-grandfather, received almost 4000 acres along the Rio Grande in a land grant from the King of Spain. This land stayed in the family for over a century, enduring even the influx of Anglo settlers in the aftermath of the Civil War.
Though Eva celebrates her “Tex-Mex” heritage, she recognizes that a significant part of her bloodline runs back to Europe. The stories within her family tree open up a fascinating and under-studied area of US history, and give a new face to America’s earliest settlers.
Eva's family is an old Spanish land grant family. That means the King of Spain granted the land - Spain was the occupier, right? What a hypocrite.

History is written by the winners they say, and imagine the pompous arrogance of people who are starting to rewrite it now, so sure they will win. But why shouldn't they, so many people like those that watch Maher's popular show literally wanting to hear things like this. What's next?
Boundaries to countries are written in blood. Why should the people who helped create the US borders have died in vain.

Eva Longoria has shown before that she is moron and brown supremacist. She got a bull crap master's degree in "Chicano" studies a few years ago. Longoria, other brown supremacists, and illegal defenders twist certain historical details around or they sometimes aren't properly educated. People like that fail to understand that certain areas never belonged to Mexico in the first place. They cannot understand or refuse to understand that the Spanish Empire colonized and occupied various areas that never belonged to Mexico or the Aztecs in the first place. I'm a 16th generation New Mexican. Most of my ancestors were Spanish or Mestizo people who arrived from either Spain or Mexico after Juan de Onate was ordered by Spain to colonize the area that is now New Mexico. Some people here in New Mexico are morons like Eva and they also sometimes claim that the United State occupied Mexico. They fail to understand that colonialism is the reason their ancestors ended up in New Mexico.
It has been well documented that after Mexico's independence from Spain, that some areas(provinces)were heavily ignored and neglected by the Mexican government. Today, you will find some Hispanic families in New Mexico, California, Arizona, and Texas whose roots go back to the Spanish Empire era and some of those people will tell you that they are glad that their home states were annexed. New Mexico is a state with a lot of problems, but overall I'm happy that I'm not living in cesspool like Mexico.
Eva "Moron" Longoria should be grateful that she and her family have resources and opportunities that might not get if they were living in Mexico. Looking at Eva's family history, they have had a lot of privileges for being mestizo Hispanics.Last edited by diane85; 06-03-2012 at 08:52 AM.

I think Glenn Beck is taking a very narrow definition of occupy. At the end of the Mexican-American war the USA controlled most of Mexico's territory including Mexico City.

Yes, it was paid for with blood. I wonder what the outcome for the people of Mexico would have been if the US had occupied all of the land that they conquered. The US wouldn't have so many people trying to escape Mexico for a better life here. I am just sayin...
Santa Anna may have won at the Alamo, but the battle of Buena Vista was another story. The full account of the battle is at the link, this is a short excerpt.
Battle of Buena Vista - Mexican-American War Battle of Buena VistaBattle of Buena Vista - Aftermath
His last assault defeated, Santa Anna held a council of war as night and heavy rains descended. Having lost 594 dead, 1,039 wounded, 1,800 missing, and 294 captured, he elected to retreat south. Taylor, whose position remained precarious, lost 267 dead, 456 wounded, and 23 missing. The final major battle in northeastern Mexico, the stunning American victory carried Taylor to the presidency the following year. On a similar note, the military reputation won by Davis aided him in becoming the future president of the Confederacy during the Civil War. Returning to Mexico City, Santa Anna led a campaign against Scott in which he was roundly defeated.
