Thread: Latino Teen Birth Rates Soar in Georgia

ATLANTA (AP) -- A nonprofit group formed by actress Jane Fonda says six out of every ten Latinos in Georgia become pregnant before turning 20.

The Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Program is trying to connect with Latino parents in Gainesville, which has a large hispanic population. The group will launch the first of many Spanish-language so-called "home-health parties" this fall.

Michele Ozumba is executive director of the group -- called G-CAPP for short. She says parents identified as community leaders will host parties with other parents in two largely Latino apartment complexes in Gainesville. The plan is to get parents to talk candidly to their teenagers about sex.

Officials say newcomers from Mexico and other parts of Latin America have made Georgia home to one of the nation's fastest-growing Latino populations over the past decade.

Some have arrived from villages that place a high value on motherhood -- even at a young age. Others -- including many who are in the United States illegally -- find themselves in difficult circumstances far from support networks. Latino activists say the result is a soaring teen pregnancy rate.

Figures from the state Department of Human Resources show the pregnancy rate for Hispanics ages 15 to 19 leaped 58 percent between 1994 and 2003 in Georgia, while the figure for both white teens and black teen ell more than 32 percent.

Bad enough that women wait to cross the border before shooting out babies like pez dispensers, now they are giving birth by record numbers here...our tax dollars at work when all those kids will be US citizens. Wonderful......

mrmiata7, this is what you call importing poverty, overpopulation, crime, tax strain for public assistance, etc. Mass illegal immigration from Latin America is a curse and not a blessing.

How many of them kids are going to grow up without fathers to raise them? Probably all of them. There is no sense of responsibility on the mans part and the girls are taught to have kids from an early age.

[b]Plop-plop, fizz, fizz, oh what a relief it is! THATS BECAUSE WE PAY FOR THEIR ONE-WAY VACATION-BABY PACKAGES. They should never be given automatic citizenship. Its wrong! Can I have a baby ANYWHERE, AND GET TO CLAIM THAT COUNTRY'S CITIZENSHIP?

Just wait till 20 million of them get citizenship and the benefits that come with that! Then they bring 30 million buddies!

I was listning to a talk radio show in which they were talking about a sex education class in schools because the latino birth rate to young women, really kids, was so high. Well some latino RIGHTS group had to pop their heads in and say they wouldn't tolerate any of that because it would make the latinos feel sex was wrong and that would go against the very fabric of THEIR CULTURE.

I did read an article on how Russia is needing their people to have more children since their population is dying out and people are only having one or two children........lets send this breeding group over there! It will fix their problem and ours.

LOL CrazyBird - that is the most interesting concept I've ever heard of! Send them to RUSSIA!! Someone has to be around to scoop the snow off the Kremlin's doorsteps during those long, cold, harsh Winters!!! Definitely jobs that the Latino's WILL DO!!
