What part of ‘illegal’ is defensible?

There were two letters written in regard to the tragic death of Matthew Denice, the Milford motorcyclist killed, allegedly by an illegal immigrant driving drunk (Telegram & Gazette, Sept. 5). One letter writer stated that the immigration status of the driver didn’t contribute to this tragedy. In this case the writer is wrong.

If the illegal immigrant had entered this country legally, like our forefathers, there would have been a background check done on him showing his criminal record in Ecuador. This would have excluded him from being here legally. Then if he decided to stay anyway, he would have been deported after being arrested for one of the many crimes he committed while here.

I think the only thing worse than innocent, hardworking, tax-paying Americans being killed by illegal immigrants is our elected officials defending and aiding these criminals, and that is simply what they are when they’re here illegally. Be it illegal entry into a house, business or country, it’s still the same thing, illegal, unlawful and against the law.

My big question is to Gov. Deval Patrick and our elected officials who defend and aid these criminals: What is the infatuation they have with illegal immigration?

Each week, we’ll select a letter to The People’s Forum, on any topic, that we consider particularly interesting and well-written. The writer will receive an engraved rosewood Telegram & Gazette Letter of the Week pen.
