Chicago City Council Passes Unanimous Resolution Calling for Federal Government to Stop Deportations

In what is mostly a symbolic gesture, the City of Chicago passed a unanimous resolution urging the federal government to stop the deportations of undocumented immigrants in the city of Chicago.

Under President Obama over one thousand individuals have been deported in Chicago, which is double the rate under the Bush administration. The resolution calls for the President to stop deportations in the city if those undocumented individuals have a family member who is a citizen or if they are parents to a child born in the U.S.

The issue of immigration is under the auspices of Homeland Security and Immigration Control agents, thereby making the enforcement of immigration law a federal issue. No one on the City Council spoke up in opposition to the resolution.
