Mexico Cancels Offer to Send Electricity to Texas

Mexico Cancels Offer to Send Electricity to Texas as Severe Cold Blasts Both

    Published February 04, 2011

Feb 2: A shopper makes their way down a darkened grocery store aisle in Plano, Texas. The cold has forced rolling blackouts across Texas.

Mexico intended to help Texas after a severe storm caused blackouts throughout the south, but the proposed partnership to fight the bone-chilling weather together is on hold -- for now.

Mexico said Thursday it was temporarily suspending an offer to provide electricity to Texas to help the U.S. state weather an ice storm that forced rolling blackouts, because of severe cold in Mexico's own territory.

Mexico's Federal Electricity Commission had said Wednesday it had agreed to transmit 280 megawatts of electricity to Texas.

But on Thursday, the commission said it was temporarily suspending the transfer because below-freezing temperatures in northern Mexico have caused some damage to the generating capacity of its own plants, causing some power outages in several parts of Chihuahua state and a reduction of about 3,800 megawatts in generation.

The commission also said Mexico needed to ensure there was enough electricity to meet domestic demand, in the face of a severe cold snap that dumped snow on the border city of Ciudad Juarez, across from El Paso, Texas.

The National Meteorological Service said wind chill in Ciudad Juarez could drop to minus-4 degrees (-20 Celsius). It said the cold front could also send snow into other border cities, including Matamoros, Reynosa, Nuevo Laredo, to the east of Ciudad Juarez, over the coming week.

The service said the front could also cause storms along Mexico's Gulf coast.

In Texas, rolling blackouts have been implemented, including in Super Bowl host city Dallas, due to high demand during the rare ice storm.

Based on reporting by the Associated Press.

It has been a really rough week here in El Paso. The drama began last Tuesday and things have gotten worse. I am terribly behind on what's been happening in the ALIPAC world and catching up seems overwhelming at the moment.
The lowest temps in the history of El Paso and as usual.....they city was caught with it's pants down.
The freeze took over control of our electric, gas and water supplies. At this moment, for the third day in a row, we are under mandatory water conservation due to the amount of water lost from bursting pipes and water mains. Schools are closed. Many places are closed actually.
There are no plumbing supplies to be found anywhere by the way.
My point today is that despite what the city has ordered as far as water conservation....there are THOSE who blatantly ignore it. We were ordered not to use anything thing that would require using lots of water. Yet yesterday we observed HUNDREDS of certain ethnic citizens, legal and illegal overwhelming car washes and laundry mats. We were shocked to see it. And what kind of people were operating these businesses despite the order? You can probably guess.

The city actually had to send people out to those businesses to FORCE them to shut down. This is the mentality of "those" people that really irritates me. They simply do not give a damn about anything but their own priorities. I spoke to a legal resident who lives across the street from me and she shocked me when she made the statement that she didn't give a damn what the city ordered, that she showers every day and will continue to do so and will continue to wash her car as well. The city has threatened as you would read in the above links provided to FORCE people to conserve by shutting the water off completely until reserves have been re-supplied.
Similar orders were issued regarding the use of electricity at the beginning of this drama and despite those orders, again, many of those people didn't bother to adhere to the order. And yeah....Mexico offered to supply us electric and then reneged. As far as I know, we are the ones who actually supply a lot of electric to Mexico.

I'm sorry to hear this for you, It opens our eyes to the truth, and the truth hurts. And when the well runs dry these same people are the ones who cry the loudest! It's been pretty nasty in Texas this past week, they're not used to snow an ice like this. "But long as my ride looks Pimp and my clothes look Fly, does it really matter if we're all high and Dry!" Sorry elpasoborn Doin' the right thing is so much harder when you're out numbered 7 to 1. It is nice to know how much tougher you are then the "Whining Ones!" isn't it? The one thing I've always tried to teach my only son is that the hardest thing to do in life is the "Right thing!" Thanks for not throwin' in the towel!

Thanks Steve! There are those of us who still will do the right thing despite those who are too self-centered to do so.

I also had wanted to mention to everyone that the Border Patrol has really suffered this last week. My husband and I have gotten almost no sleep. Because he's a BP supervisor, his phone rang endlessly day and night. Every facility in the area had major problems with all utilities. Even the gates to facilities froze up. Many many incidents of burst water lines. And by the way, those responsible for repairs to facilities weren't offered ANY overtime, just comp time. When Homeland Security took over such funding was diverted away from Border Patrol Maintenance. The pipes burst at the Santa Teresa station that I know of, at least four times.

Yeah, global warming huh? Got us here in Houston too. I have never experienced such a cold winter. We hit a low of 21 degrees and did not get above 32 for about 36 hours. Houston had over 800 accidents friday when the ice storm hit. The city was virtually shut down. We had rolling blackouts and my work was without power as well as my home.

Its a crying shame Texas has to beg for electricity from a 3rd world country like Mexico.

What a shame. This is how Obama wants it tho. Remember him telling the coal industry he's going to bankrupt them? Maybe if we'd been allowed to build more coal plants, we would not have to go begging favors from third world dumps like messico for what we should have been producing on our own.

Just think of the jobs it would create if we could build more coal plants too. It's obvious this is being done my design.

The following was pretty illuminating as far as why the electric failed:

Times Q&A: EP Electric's CEO discusses storm

I had the impression from this article that not much money has been spent on upgrades and a whole lot more of the high rates we pay for their services has been going to stockholder returns.
