But today 20.8 percent of Americans don’t speak English at home — up from 17.9 percent in 2000. Among immigrants today, it is increasingly fashionable to reject American exceptionalism in favor of multiculturalism. To pretend that this isn’t happening isn’t optimism; it’s sheer fantasy.
I hope that George Will was consciously trying to create controversy, because if he actually believes what he wrote, he needs to get a new drug of choice.

At home, Mexicans tend to help each other. It used to be a cliche that country people would push stalled cars off the road, so that drivers wouldn't have to deal with corrupt police. Within the last year, a factory owner in Mexico told me about his employees taking up a collection, to help another worker with medical bills.

Hispanic voters just don't think that the Republican party cares about ordinary people. Unless the GOP can connect with Hispanic Americans - perhaps on family values, perhaps on protecting jobs for their children and grandchildren - creating more Hispanic voters would be a good argument for having these folks committed. Either that of for deserting the GOP for a party which would protect American interests, even if it means giving up the money that GOP reps get from their large donors.
