Donald Trump sits down with Rick Perry, Mary Fallin, Tulsi Gabbard and media execs, as he moves to fill out cabinet

President-elect Donald Trump welcomed another slate of prospective hires — including more former foes and longtime friends — to Trump Tower Monday as he moved forward in filling out his cabinet.

Trump spent the morning at his Midtown abode with former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, said to be a candidate for energy secretary or defense secretary, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin, under consideration to be interior secretary, longtime adviser and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.), reportedly under consideration to be Veterans Affairs secretary, the mogul’s transition team said Monday.

In a surprising twist, Trump also sat down with Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii), the former vice chair of the Democratic National Committee who had been a fervent Bernie Sanders supporter throughout her party’s presidential primary.

In a statement, Gabbard said she and Trump had a “frank and positive conversation” about foreign policy, terrorism and the fight against ISIS and urged Democrats and Republicans to “come together.”

“While the rules of political expediency would say I should have refused to meet with President-elect Trump, I never have and never will play politics with American and Syrian lives,” said Gabbard, who The New York Times reported may be under consideration as a potential Ambassador to the U.N. “I believe we can disagree, even strongly, but still come together on issues that matter to the American people and affect their daily lives. We cannot allow continued divisiveness to destroy our country.”

Other visitors to Trump Tower on Monday included National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd and former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, as well as more than a dozen high-profile journalists and media executives, including CNN President Jeff Zucker, NBC News President Deborah Turness, Fox News Channel Co-presidents Bill Shine and Jack Abernethy, Charlie Rose, George Stephanopoulos, Chuck Todd, Lester Holt and Wolf Blitzer.

Such meetings with journalists — which will all be off the record — aren’t uncommon. President Obama and other White House officials held similar sessions with media personalities.

But the tone of those sit-downs could be different for Trump, who has endured a strained relationship with many members of the media after having made them a target of his ire throughout his presidential campaign.

Later Monday, Trump will release an online video that outlines his legislative priorities, his transition team said. The video would mark just his second public statement since his election night speech (following his interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes” that aired last week).

Meanwhile, Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway indicated that Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) was still “rumored” to be under consideration as the President-elect’s secretary of state — which would appear to contradict the mogul’s signals over the weekend, when he sat down with Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani, who were thought to be the frontrunners for the high-profile post.

Conway, however, warned the media against drawing conclusions from Trump’s meetings over the weekend at his private golf club in Bedminster, N.J.

“Not everyone who consults with the President-elect or meets with him is going to be in his cabinet,” she said on CNN Monday morning — a sentiment echoed by Trump transition spokesman Jason Miller, who said on the team’s daily conference call that announcements weren’t expected Monday.

Miller added that Trump would spend his Thanksgiving holiday at his Mar-a-Lago resort in southern Florida, while vice president-elect Mike Pence would spend it in Mississippi, where his son, a U.S Marine, is stationed.

Trump’s meetings Monday came after he spent his entire weekend holed up with a cadre of advisers and prospective hires at his golf resort. He emerged late Sunday night to proclaim that “we've made a couple of deals” — a statement many had presumed indicated announcements were imminent.

In particular, Trump seemed to have zeroed in on naming his defense secretary, who he had suggested, in a tweet Sunday morning, could be retired Marine Corps Gen. James Mattis.

Trump tweeted Sunday about his sit-down a day earlier with the former U.S. Central Command leader.

He also seemed to have whittled down his options for secretary of state to Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani, although Conway's comments Monday may indicate otherwise.

Trump sat down with Romney for nearly 90 minutes Saturday, and on Sunday vice President-elect Mike Pence said the 2012 GOP nominee was “under active and serious consideration to serve as secretary of state.”

Giuliani, for his part, was one in tow at Bedminster all day Sunday, and Trump himself told reporters outside the club that he was considering the former New York Mayor to be his "secretary of state, and other things.”

David Petraeus, the retired four-star general and former CIA director who resigned after sharing confidential information with his mistress, was also still under consideration for the post, The New York Times reported Sunday.

Among the many other visitors to hold court with Trump Sunday were Hollywood agent Ari Emanuel, the brother of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel; Peter Kirsanow, a member of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and a former National Labor Relations Board member; Wilbur Ross, a billionaire investor rumored to be under consideration for the commerce secretary post; House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.); Kris Kobach, the Kansas secretary of state who helped draft Arizona's infamous Senate Bill 1070, a strict anti-illegal-immigration bill known in some circles as the "show me your papers law;" and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who just weeks ago was demoted from his role as the transition camp's leader.

After a slow start — in part due to Christie's ouster as its leader — Trump's transition effort has picked up the pace in recent days, making three key appointments Friday: Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) as attorney general, retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn as national security adviser, and Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-Kan.) nominated to lead the CIA.
