Rick Perry opts out of Trump debate

Rick Perry joined most of the GOP field in rejecting a debate moderated by Donald Trump.

In a statement, Perry's campaign says the Texas governor told Trump he'll be busy meeting Iowa voters before the caucuses Jan. 3.

"Traditional retail campaigning in the days and weeks leading up to the Iowa caucus is the Perry campaign's top priority," the statement says.

The statement says Perry, one of several candidates to visit Trump at his New York City office, "respects" Trump "and the folks at Newsmax," the conservative publication hosting the Dec. 27 debate.

Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum accepted the invitation to the Trump-moderated debate. Jon Huntsman, Ron Paul and Mitt Romney will take a pass, and Huntsman and Paul made clear they think Trump posing questions is too much like a reality TV show.

Michele Bachmann said on Fox News this morning that she's undecided and concerned about Trump's recent comment that he might run as an independent.
