Powers to arrest illegal aliens sought

Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney wants his state troopers to be able to arrest illegal immigrants in the United States.
Romney is seeking such powers from federal authorities, which state officers under current laws cannot do merely on the basis of one's immigration status, reports the Boston Globe. In such cases, troopers can call the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement center in Vermont and detain the immigrants if federal officials request it.
Under Romney's proposal, troopers would be able to check an immigrant's legal status during routine patrol stops and decide whether the immigrant should be held, says the report.
"It's one more thing you can do to make this a less attractive place for illegal aliens to come to work," Romney was quoted as saying. He told the Globe the additional powers would give the state police a way of "finding and detaining illegal aliens in the ordinary course of business." Some states and a handful of counties and localities already have such powers.

As you can see below the Local Pro-illegals do not like the idea, they are also calling the Governor, I hope Romney pushes this through anyways.

If you can stand reading it below is the pro-illegals position from their website below.

Call Governor Romney (617-725-4005) and tell him Massachusetts should not become a police state. Governor Romney's proposal to target immigrants with state troopers makes Massachusetts less safe and merely scapegoats an immigrant workforce that strengthens our Commonwealth.

    Immigrant Community Slams Romney Proposal

Boston, MA – Governor Romney’s proposal to dedicate the limited time and resources of state troopers to the enforcement of federal immigration law will make communities across Massachusetts less safe for all citizens.

"With this proposal, Governor Romney is clearly advocating for the creation of a police state where anyone who looks or sounds like an immigrant will be profiled by state troopers," said Ali Noorani, executive director of the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition. "By turning state police into immigration agents, the Governor will ensure that immigrants will avoid contact with local law enforcement, putting entire communities at risk. Word will spread like wildfire among newcomers that if they as victims, witnesses, or concerned residents have any contact with police, they or their family members will risk deportation. They will remain silent and our streets less safe as a result. Experience shows that this fear will extend not only to contact with local police, but also to the fire department, hospitals, and the public school system.

"Governor Romney’s proposal is a form of racial profiling, and as such it violates constitutional guarantees of equal protection, due process, and freedom of religion. These guarantees are not a privilege reserved for U.S. citizens, but internationally recognized human rights that apply to all people, regardless of their immigration status."
Noorani continued, "Governor Romney has also ignored the thoughtful deliberations of public safety officials across the United States. In fact, on June 8, 2006, the Major Cities Police Chiefs Association clearly outlined their opposition to local law enforcement of federal immigration law. It is clear that public safety officials across the country would rather spend their time arresting criminals not low-wage housecleaners, painters and gardeners."

It's not much of a leap to guess that Noorani is an immigrant. If he is so concerned about the improper administration of justice here maybe he would be happier back home. The least he could do is stand at the southern border and warn the illegals about how bad it is here and advise them to go home.

This Noorani has his 2 cents in any article that is for enforcing our laws or cutting back on social services for illegal immigrants. How he gets his 2 cents into every article is beyond me. Yes he is pro-illegal and believes we should give them all amnesty. I will call Mitt Romney and give him my thanks for making an effort to enforce our laws utilizing state troopers. He is running for president in 2008. Not sure if I would vote for him yet, but he is getting on the right track.

    Ali Noorani.

Sounds like a name that would be on the FBI's most-wanted fugitive terrorist list to me.

He should be hiding out in a cave in N. Waziristan clutching his "holy" Koran, not threatening American citizens with frivolous litigation or e-mail campaigns.
