The vast majority of Americans want more security on the border. Some surveys have found that 90 percent want military troops placed there. Let's give them something even better. Add a large number of additional border patrol agents and expand their role. If we added a huge force on the border, say 10,000 more people, it would clearly add a significant amount of security. These same people could be cross trained and used in national emergencies somewhat like the national guard is used.

We all remember what happened in New Orleans after Katrina. The city flooded violence increased and the local, state and federal government were not prepared to deal with the situation. Now imagine if we had a large force nearby say on the Texas border ready to move in and provide security and humanitarian assistance. It is a few hours drive from the Texas border to New Orleans.

This would work in California as well. We all know there will be another massive earthquake in California someday. If this plan could be implemented there would be a huge back up force to assist in this disaster. They could provide security prevent, looting and help in rescue efforts or other humanitarian work.

Here are some advantages to this idea.

In conjunction with the wall (they are slowly building) a large increase in the size of the border patrol would actually secure our border. Preventing terrorists, drug smugglers and illegal immigrants from entering the country.

We would have a large reserve of civilian police to assist our fellow citizens after a natural disaster or terror attack when local authorities are overwhelmed.
