What is the Green Card Lottery?
The United States government issues 55,000 Green Cards every year through the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, commonly known as the Green Card Lottery. I see nothing wrong with allowing 55000 people from all over the world to immigrate to US LEGALY. That many new immigrants won't affect this country negatively. It's the ILLEGAL aliens who come here who are the problem, especially when there are MILLIONS of them.

I'd like to expand on that, if I may. It's the UNSKILLED, UNEDUCATED illegal aliens who have nothing to offer America who are the problem.

even then, if we had no illegals, there could be jobs for the 55000 immigrants who came here legally. They just need to make enough to support themselves.

This is a dumb way to pick immigrants and for that matter future American citizens. Pay $100 and put your name in a hat? No other requirements? Plus the ones that loose will start thinking about coming illegally.

Well since Ted Kennedy dreamed this up of course it is a stupid idea.

That is not exactly the way it works out. If you "win" the lottery, you will have 5 separate background checks done on you. The winner must also pass a physical and prove that they can support themselves for at least 5 years. If you fail to do that, you lose your winning ticket. Back ground checks and physical are at the immigrants expense

A visa lottery must have been thought up by a bureaucrat that had absolutely nothing to do but come up with the dummest idea in government,(and he had much competition in this department).We know that most of the 911 hijackers were here on legal documents that had supposedly included thorough background checks.Let's just say that I don't trust a bureaucracy that has allowed 600,000 illegal alien criminals to blend into American society without a trace,to be capable of vetting 50,000 lottery visas in the correct way.This practice is a very,very,bad idea.Not that this worries our honorable Dept.of Homeland Security a great deal,evidently.

I know they have to show "proof" because an ex co-worker of my husband, when he was still living in Ireland, lost his ticket because of this. Now whether or not they get here, return the borrowed funds they swore were not borrowed, and end up illegally applying for aid and receiving it, I really don't know.

The VISA lottery has high requirements, you need to be educated
and have good financial resources, otherwise you will be immediately
rejected.

But it is not true that you get a free ticket, you pay for your ticket
and your government fees.
