I'm not opposed, in principle at least, to all US citizens being able to access health care, but it is getting out of hand:
1. Illegal residents take advantage of our hospitals and clinics
2. US citizens CAN go elsewhere for lower cost non-emergency treatment; When even less developed nations build new facilities they are well built and the medical care is high quality. They may not have the very latest technology, but it is at least comparable to what we had in the 1980's or even 1990's. A lot of Americans are not getting the latest treatment either. I've read that Malaysia offers some of the best, AFFORDABLE medical care:http://www.medicaltourism.com.my/en/index.aspx
3. If the US federal government did have a "Single-Payer System" that would probably translate into a stronger monopoly of US physicians on US treatment. Then the arguments would shift to price controls. I guess there have been programs now where the insurer works to get the client treatment at some place that doesn't cost as much ( maybe Canada or Mexico?). Put the government in as insurer and watch costs skyrocket.
