HARLINGEN — A 33-year-old Harlingen woman and her 9-year-old son were hospitalized after about 15 masked men broke into their trailer and shot them, Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio said Wednesday.

The men, who were dressed in black, yelled “policia,” Spanish for police, as they entered the trailer in the 23300 block of Tamm Lane at about midnight and fired gunshots, Lucio said.

Neighbors said they heard about five gunshots.

Investigators are still determining a motive for the shooting, the sheriff said, adding that it didn’t appear to be a robbery.

Lucio said three vehicles pulled up in front of the trailer before about 15 men wearing ski masks and black clothing entered the house.

Authorities are withholding the victims’ names and also the name of the hospital where they were taken.

Lucio, who said the mother and son were in stable condition, did not disclose the extent of their injuries.

The victim’s sister, who lived in the trailer with her six children, called the Sheriff’s Department for help at about 12:30 a.m., Lucio said.
