YouTube Taps ADL As Partner In Fight Against Hate

YouTube Taps ADL As Partner In Fight Against Hate

New York, NY, December 11, 2008 … YouTube has reached out to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) for its expertise in dealing with hate on the Internet. In one outgrowth of that partnership, the League is now a contributor to YouTube's newly launched Abuse & Safety Center, where users are empowered to identify and confront hate, and to report abuses.

The YouTube Abuse & Safety Center features information and links to resources developed by ADL to help Internet users respond to and report offensive material and extremist content that violates YouTube's Community Guidelines on hate speech.

"YouTube is an incredible tool for sharing videos and giving individuals an opportunity to broadcast themselves, but like other social networking sites it can be abused or used for sinister and dangerous purposes," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "There are those who may try to exploit the technology to spread racism, anti-Semitism and other forms of hate."

"We commend YouTube for their efforts to provide users with access to important information from those with expertise, such as ADL and others, on how to effectively respond to hate on the Internet and to report abuses," said Mr. Foxman. "Obviously, the industry has a vested interest in providing a safe online experience for the community of users, but they cannot go it alone. Maintaining a prejudice-free zone on the Internet means constant vigilance on the part of everyone. Parents, educators, industry, government and nonprofit watchdogs must work together. The bigots can only be sidelined if people of good will are actively reporting abuses, so that the Internet service providers can take action."

Since the advent of the Internet, ADL has played a leading role in working to combat hate on the Internet through education and advocacy. The League monitors extremism and hate on the Internet and works with major service providers, including Google, to identify and respond to offensive content. Last year, the League launched a major initiative to counteract cyberbullying by providing access to educational resources and information to parents, teachers, students and caregivers. ADL also serves as the U.S. representative to the International Network Against Cyber-Hate (INACH).

The YouTube Abuse & Safety Center was unveiled on December 11 at the annual conference of the Family Online Safety Institute in Washington D.C. A link to the Center is also available at the bottom of every YouTube page.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.

This is just one more step to take away free speech. This entire thing is getting out of control....or is it more control?

    Help Center

Abuse and Safety Center: Hateful Content

Tips for confronting hate speech on YouTube from the Anti-Defamation League.

Flag: Flag the offensive video for review by the YouTube team. Make sure to include why you thought the video was hateful.

Think: Perspective is crucial. Think before you respond, and try to respond in a thoughtful, careful manner.

Speak: Post videos or comments that oppose the offensive point of view. Let the YouTube community see a competing perspective.

Applaud: Don't forget to post positive comments on videos that share positive messages.

Talk: Talk to your friends, teachers, or family about what you've seen.

Learn: Many groups publish information about combating particular kinds of prejudice, such as the Anti-Defamation League's resources on anti-Semitism.

E-mail: Notify groups like the Anti-Defamation League, which keep track of trends in hate speech.

Act: Take active steps to combat prejudice online and offline.

The ADL is a proven group of liars that occasionally go after anti-Semites and then spend the rest of their time bashing legitimate opinions on illegal immigration.

This is a dire threat. The ADL should have absolutely nothing to do with the contents on Youtube.

No one should have any say as to contents on any website other than the owners unless it violates law. If someone doesn't like what they see or hear, no one is stopping them from moving on never to return. Is youtube possibly caving to pressure from the ADL or other org's that could hurt their bottom line?

The funny thing about youtube is in order to even see questionable content, you have to pretty much be looking for it. Then by offering the ability to leave comments fan the flames further. Heck, when viewers leave comments after a video they protest, the language or strikes are usually far worse than the video itself.

Look at many of the personal sites on myspace and the others. The kids of today have little to no morals so should myspace be censored like youtube?

I say we start documenting anything that Youtube and the ADL bans. Then a lawsuit can be brought for discrimination.

Remember that E-Harmony was forced to give services to gay and lesbians. So hopefuly we can mount a response to Youtube and their censorship.

Founded in 1913? Where in the hell have you been" back in the 60's prejudism and racism was live and well with holds barred.

ADL sells it's self to the highest bidder and represents accordingly, whether the cause is good, bad, or indifferent.

    This is BS

So in other words, it will be okay for illegal gangbangers to post their videos talking about taking over America, and killing Americans, but all the minutemen videos will be removed.

Of course the irony is, the ADL has been one of the strongest supporters of the racist state of Israel, who for over 50 years has been ethnically cleansing an entire race of Palestinians.

And now these very same b.s. artists are going to educate us on "hate speech"? Forgive me while I laugh in their fool faces.
